Ethernet Cables?

Recommended Posts

I got my xbox connected to my pc to use xbox live, durrr.

I get lag a fair bit these days yet i have a faster connection, around 6mg. Read loads of forums and tried some tests and rang xbox support as well. Came up with the best solution, connect straight to the modem..

Soo, my current ethernet cable doesn't fit in the modem, the connector is too big.

The one on the left is my current cable at both ends. I need a cable that has both of these.

Any ideas?

In saying this i have port available for both sizes, so that might help?

So let me get this straight, your trying to plug the xbox into the phoneline-in socket then the usb one presumably into your computer? Where is the connection going to come from? ;)

What you CAN do, is plug the modem into the pc, then plug the xbox into the pc via the rj45 cable and share the internet connection through the computer. 6 meg is definately enough bandwidth to manage the xbox easily through a shared connection as only gaming only uses 10-20kb/s at most... which is why even a standard 512k connection is adequate for them.

The other option is to get a router and plug straight into that. They're only about £20-40 so not too much.

Whatever the hell you're planning on doing, changing your setup will do nothing at all for you. I'm not sure why you're getting lag (maybe server is too far away, maybe your ISP is rubbish, maybe you have spyware raping your bandwidth etc etc) but your plan will do nothing.

I used to play Counter-Strike on my 33.6k modem (before 56k  ). I'm not sure what my point is though.

I'll have a read after another cigerette.

I dunno where you got that idea from? But i'm currently playing through my computer so if i bypass the pc then i won't have to turn it on plus anything that the computer is doing won't affect my playability.

I also used to play alot of Red Alert and Duke Nukem through 56k fine.

What i've read is that a connection from the xbox straight to the modem will be faster. Not sure how much faster but at least it's faster. But like you say spyware, if the computer isn't using the bandwidth then the spyware can't either, so therefore a faster connection. You kind of answered you own question/ statement there.

To make it easier to understand i'm trying to achieve this:

But like said by UrbanPoet i can't use the intial cable. That is why i'm looking for a different cable or adapter. But i don't want to spend money on a router just so i can play online without lag.

I don't know really, maybe you wrote it yourself ;)

Having got one of these modems right here on the computer desk now i can tell you now that the socket your trying to plug you ethernet cable from the xbox into the modem won't work because its a line in socket. And as its the only one on the modem there will be no room for the cable from the phone socket to the modem. If you do get hold of an rj45 to rj11 cable (ie a cable with an rj45 connector at one ende and an rj11 at the other) and you plug you xbox in what are you going to do then? Nothing really, unless your going to try and put the usb connector into the phone socket :S

You need to buy a new modem/router, or run the connection through your pc. There is NO OTHER WAY of doing it.

@Eskimo

Dude your trying to connect a USB modem that requires drivers and a USB connection into a console it wont work, you need to create a network using either internet connection sharing(what you have already set up) or by getting a router and setting it up that way.

As kris said 6MB is more then enough bandwith for the incomming connection, but you need to be careful of upload speeds, thats where lag is more prominent, Make sure you have no file sharing programs running on your PC and also your not downloading pr0n while trying to play!

I was feeling kind, and you obviously don't understand at all what your trying to do, so i made you a picture to explain.

I was referring to what you wrote.

I was reading upload speed was the main issue. I done a test but i didn't really have much of an idea when i compared it so it never really helped to see if that was the issue?

As for P2P and porn, i don't bother with either.

I understand what i want to do :P

It makes sense now why you were so jumpy on the matter. I can see the modem cables clearly now.. If you look at my modem the cables disapear into the abyss so i thought the RJ11 was going into the computer you see and the permanent cable was the phone socket one. I never actually gave it a thought the permanent cable was USB even though it's a USB modem. I just presumed i could do a direct connection. Thanks for sorting that out.

Guess there isn't much i can do now.
