Old People.....

I had a nasty situation a quite few years ago sitting in a car with my mom while my grandmother was driving. At some stage, she was coming out of a small side road and wanting to turn left onto a dual carriage way (on english roads, she'd be trying to turn right) and noticed just as she drove onto the road that she couldn't do that because being a dual carriage way there was a barrier in between. We were confronted with cars rushing straight at us from the left and in the last moment she went into reverse and drove back into the side road. Both me and my mom were absolutely shocked, started shouting at her and her only reaction was "yeah, whatever... no big deal, we're alright" but as a matter of fact we were very close to having a nasty accident.

My dad on the other hand who is now 70, is an amazingly good driver. Never had an accident in his life apart from when he was doing rallys in Scotland almost half a century ago. He just has bloody good judgment of what is going on around him and predicts dangerous things that might occur on the road. So old doesn't always mean no good.

None the less, I think old drivers should be tested for how well they observe the road and how good their reactions and control of the car are. If they're no good at it, just lock their gear box so they only have 1st and 2nd and take out half the spark plugs.

Yeah but i'm nearly the same age as you, sensible and have very good reaction times.

Yea, but it depends what your reacting to!

How many people on here have been driving at 30mph thinking it was slow...until you mis-judge a turn or something appears infront of you? Suddently that 30mph seems like 60, and those 3 seconds suddenly disappear.

I can't exactly talk about driving cars because I haven't been doing it long enough, but motorcycles I can. Its like when you see someone on a scooter and they think they're Ron Haslem because they've been riding a year and can do a wheelie on their plastic peice of shit. Its the same with cars...a good driver is a safe driver.

Dunno, its hard to explain, but I think most of you will understand what I'm trying to say :P

In this specific case, it is a stationary car parked at the side of the road . In general though, i'm good at fast paced computer games, always get some of the highest scores possible on reaction time tests i've tried etc.

I just get irritated with him braking for me when theres completely no need to, i mean its actually a bit more dangerous with what he's doing as on more than one occasion a car has tried to overtake me whilst the guy was sitting there and had his foot slightly on the brake and one time the overtaking car nearly hit an oncoming car, they had to swerve in front of me at the last second.

Yeah, sounds like your instructor's a bit of a w@nker... That would bug me soooooo much! Asking for an accident from the sounds of it.
