Play In Middleburn Cranks

Bought some middleburns off here a while ago and finally got round to fitting them. Problem is that where the bashring mounts onto the drive side crank there is play in the splines, so the bash has slight movement. You can feel as you pedal a slight 'click' where the bash moves and the cranks dont.

Anything that can be done? At the moment I’ve ‘persuaded’ part of a coke can in between the gap in the splines, but there is still movement.

Suggestions? Aside from getting new cranks!

Get some bearing fit (like threadlock but sets harder) from any car autofactors/ halfords.

Clean any oil or grease off the splines.

Put the bearing fit around all the splines and a little on the lockring threads, re fit the bashring and tighten the lockring.

Leave overnight and the bearing fit will set solid and should stop any play.

Ah I see... did wonder if that was the problem after I posted, sorry! :$

I would try some Stud and Bearing it on the splines, but I'm sure someone else has a better suggestion!

That’s cool man, Stud and Bearing, that’s the locktite stuff, so the same as jimbo160 suggested?

Are the splines still intact? You've not ridden with it loose for a while and worn them down so theres play?

Maybe do a coke can bodge? Cut some metal from a coke can and pack the splines with strips of metal to make a tighter fit.

I got the cranks second hand off tf a while ago, only just got round to fitting them and there is play, so I spose they must have been ridden loose. I am currently doing a coke can bodge (well scrumpy jack bodge actually, how chavtastic am I?) but it’s a bugger to force the can in, and because its under such load the metal is deforming thinner.

I think I'll go with this (as tarty adam also suggested), but will I ever be able to take the thing apart again? Not to fussed really though, I was considering giving it to my bro to attack with his welder, but thats lots of waiting around cos he lives miles away.

Dont weld it as it ruins the heat treatment thats gone into it and it will simply crack.

If you use bearing fit it will come apart easy enough.

It should work depending on how bad the splines are. Its well worth a try though.

It works by filling the gaps that are causing the play when its in a liquid form then it sets and should hold everything in place.

I used to have a hope rear disc and the rotor was mounted to the hub on splines with a lockring to hold it in place. The same thing happend to that, it would come loose alot and even when it was as tight as I could get it there was still play in it. Bearing fit fixed it though.

Well I just got a set of used Middleburn cranks. The drive side crank can move side to side a millimeter or so. It is not a huge about of movement at all but I would like to stop it if I could. Does this mean it is loose on the ISIS BB, or is the bash ring causing this? It also makes that ticking noise, and the crank went on to the BB nice and tight. Please Please Please help me out.

This drawing has the crank pointing straight up in the air away from the ground.

Would this tool work for tightening the lock ring?

Yep, that tool tightens the lockring that hold the bashring to the crank.

check to see if it is just one crank that wobbles, if both wobble in time with one another, then it is a problem with the bb not the cranks. Make sure that the crank bolts are tight and if they are then the problem is that you have rounded cranks. As above the coke can trick is not bad at all,

inur's guide is the way to do it.

It is such a little movement it is hard to tell if the bash ring is doing it too. If the bash ring was loose would it make the cranks wiggle like in the diagram above? It fit onto the BB nicely, not sloppy, so it would seem kind of odd if it was loose on the BB.

its tricky to tell when there is only a little movement, but take it all apart and put it all back together again, correctly tightened. If it still moves then run through the checks below.

Try and wiggle the cranks separately, with one hand holding the crank and one holding the frame. If they wiggle at 90 degrees to their direction of rotation and you feel a difference, where one crank seems to be moving and one not, then you have a rounded crank on the side that moves and you should try out Inur’s repair. Even if it is a little amount of movement it still might be worth trying to stop it worsening

If you do the above and you find that both cranks move with each other, i.e. one goes in and one goes out, then you have a worn bb and it either needs tightening or replacing

If you do the above and find that the cranks wiggle at 90 degrees from the direction of rotation, but they do independently, i.e. they both can move in or out separately from one another, then your shit out of luck and you have 2 rounded cranks! Try Inur’s repair on both.

If your still having trouble, take off the drive side crank leaving the bash on and the lockring done up. Now try and rotate the bashring while holding the crank. If you have movement here, then try tightening the lockring. If tightening the lockring does not stop the movement then the splines between the bash and the crank have play in them and you need to try one of the fixings suggested above (stud & bearing or JB weld).

If I used a couple pieces of coke can on the BB splines, would that make the play even worse if I didn't use the pieces of can in the future?( Would it stretch out the splines even more?)

My BB is over 2 years old. Could it become out of tolerance so the crank would have play on the splines?

it probably would do the cranks no harm in itself, as the can will be a softer material than the cranks and so the can will deform not the cranks. However if it starts to have play again do the bodge over again with a new can. If you leave it with play then the cranks will get worse.

If your careful and prepared to do the coke can bodge as soon as you notice the play again, then the cranks will last a while longer.

Well I did some testing and the main problem was the loose BB. That is where the ticking came from. There might be a tiny tiny tiny tiny amount of play but it is probably from the old BB. It might just be in my head.

I hate that kind of thing though, it really messes with my head!
