Adobe After Effects

[Greetings]

Got myself a trial of After Effects, looked at some tutorials to learn how this thing works, but the majority of interesting tutorials already assume you know the program inside-out. I'm sure there are a few people on here familiar with this program. Would you care to explain the tutorial below in a more simple way, as if you were explaining it to an idiot?

Tutorial 1

For instance, I have no idea what " Duplicate the Layer and Shift Position 1 Frame" or "Make only a tip portion using Track Matte"" means. Ok, it's in bad english but for somebody who knows the program it should be obvious.

duplicating the layer just creates a copy of the layer you choose to duplicate, if that made sense ?
