do not worry a second longer. some people on the bike departments have never had any experience with bikes, let alone ridden trials and been on a cycle related forum.

the pdi of halfords is more of a safety check to ensure they do not get it in the neck..quality is ignored to a certain extent in comparision to other bike shops. so yeh all the 'mechanics' do on new bikes is work through a safety checklist. also from my experience repairs take a backseat but is mostly first free servvice and punctures.

Yeah, i work for Cycleworks in Guildford. We have to deal with Halfords every day, Either through bodged reapirs or through the Cycle to Work scheme......From my experience they are unprofessional and your best off with a Bicycle shop, not a nation wide Retailer.

Evans Cyckes for instance. Started as a small bicycle shop in Godalming the same time Cycleworks did...Evans grew and grew and grew and now have tens of stores nation wide, but can't offer the customer service and quality of service (bikes) that you require from somewhere that sells bikes.

I'm not looking for an argument, These are just my experiences and views.

As for not having any Qualifications, present yourself well, turn up 5 minuites early, and explain your interest in bikes and what you know. Good luck (Y)

i live in Hampshire/ west sussex and i have looked around many local bike shops and they are all taken :( plus i just wuit my job due to a disagreement and need one ASAP well from what i have heard i am at a bit more ease. And yes halfords are renowned for shoody repairs thats why i am looking to change that hopefully the manager sees that :D so how do i satnd on the college front?? i do not have timetable yet so i don't know free days?? will they just ignore the application?

Thanks Tom

P.s could i still go to them with my bike and say "look i do my own repairs" ?

haha you have no chance in changing that. just sell more boxed bikes..makes life so much easier for yourself.

there are more customers to deal with too..but the customers are retarded so its hard work. no offence to anyone that actually buys bike stuff from halfords...but seriously if you know anything about bikes at all then you would shop at a proper bike shop.

could be worse though. at least you are working with bikes.

Yeah, as lons as you look tidy and don't ask too much money anyone can get a job in Halfords. Just walk in there with your trials bike and then show off ! Thats what i did. Walked into Cycleworks and said "This is my bike, i built it myself 6 years ago. I'm a trials rider, I'm up for a laugh, i have ridden abroad and love cycling in different locations. Have done several seasons snowboarding in Morillion, France. And can work full time ? My old job paid £5 an hour can you beat that ?" Got a call 25 minuited later offering me a job.

Ok i'm putting my application today wish me luck :) I phoned up to gather some more information and it seems that Full time is 5 days a week = a weekend day which i won't be able to do. However there is a part time slot opening soon but i am afraid of the application being hidden away and not considered for the post :)

Don't wear stuff that will show if you get oil/blood on them, as if you're applying for 'bike mechanic' they'll ask you to build a bike, and i caught my thumb on a big box staple and got blood n my new blue shirt :(

Suits always win the interviewer over.

Build the bike well, it's pretty much all they assess you on, they'll talk to you/ask questions first but that's nothing really, not like an office job where the interview you for hours, just make sure you build that bike well.

o have a suit but i thought it would be a bit OTT! Building a bike there isn't exactly building a bike it is taking it out the box and putting the wheels on stem and bars haha that's it!! :D child's play. so suit? Casual. or shirt and trousers? red shirt? White shirt? Tie? no Tie? :S

Trousers shirt and tie at least. Trust me, i've been told by many an employer that if you wear a suit you're more likely to get the job, even if it's just something like macdonalds, always wear a suit/ nearly a suit.

I wore a suit without the jacket and i'm now employed in halfords, being a bike mechanic.
