right i'm after some decent speakers. I'm getting tired of making audio cd's to play on my cd player. I though just get decent pc speakers and just play my tunes off there. i was looking at some which were around 40Wrms, if thats any good? Looking to spend around £50.

thanks

Creative Gigaworks T20

My flatmate has these and they are really good for their size.

You can also get bigger and better versions too, the T40.

Not sure of the price though, i think he spent around £50.

EDIT: ebuyer have them for £49.99 and im pretty sure they do free postage.

Not sure if you want 2.1s, but i've just bought some Creative Insipire M2600s and i'm pleased with them, absolutley fine for what i need them for (drum n bass ) sub is powerful, 17watts iirc, and something like 2 7w sats, for only 30 quid! And they're a good brand, so you kinda know they're gonna be good.

However, i've only ever heard another 2.1 set and i'm not sure what ones they are, but these are good (what i'm trying to say is, i've not got much to compare them with)

you'll notice the difference between £50 and £100, I'd step up the ladder.

Infact, I'd ditch the all in one gimick (unless you have a grand to spend) and get a cheap second hand amp and hunt down some B&W's on ebay or something, Will piss all over any "pc speakers"

+3

A PC running through an amp sounds so mint compared to PC speakers. Apart from ym mates which has an external soundcard ans 2.1 speakers blah blah blah but will it play tapes? No.

I was expecting to get battered saying that, IMO all in one systems are a waste of time unless your spending big money or have little/no space.

A brand name speaker, even 10 years old will still kick the ass of any entry level 5.1/2.1/10.2 whatever, system.

On a good day you'd be able to get them for just over £100

Get some cheapish speaker cable from soemwhere (your not an audiophile so you wont notice the difference) and pick up and oldschool amp from somewhere, obviously the more powerful and well created the amp, the better the sound but your still 10 leagues ahead of what you were planning.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dont post up saying your argos special 5.1 system is better, you simply are wrong.

thanks for the input guys, would my soundcard be ok powering a 'normal' amp? i don't know what it is, the pc is fairly new (less than a year old)

Click start>Right click my computer>properties>hardware tab>device manager and scroll down to the audio symbol.... it should have your soundcard or its product code there.

Alternatively, look inside the computer.

Im after these beasts

Have a good soundcard to, tempted by amp and seperate sub and monitors, but have no clue how to set it up.

I have these with an X-Fi Xtreme gamer soundcard. Does the job rather well :D

Although when my uni loan comes through i may get some better speakers, or better graphics card...... decisions, decisions :shifty:

Soundcard wont be a problem as whatever signal is AMPLIFIED (hence, amp) by the amp itesel, again this is the reason its mains powered.

things like subs can be either powered or non powered - generally for home use you need a powered sub if you wanted to go down that route.

(I have a CL Soundblaster live 5.1 - about 4 years old, Goes to an arcam a75 amp and then into two B&W 602.5's - had another set of 602s3's but had to sell them :()

The sound card will make a difference. The sound card is responsible for converting the audio file and thats why, when using the same speakers... you can hear so much difference when you change them.

Having an amp connected to your soundcard is good, but its not as good as amplifying a really good signal from a decent soundcard ;)
