OK i have Middleburn RS7 Super Pro Trials cranks (16T) for those who don't no, and I'm running (14T) on the back and I'm thinking of getting (13T) instead just to get a bit more power kinda thing. has anyone got that gearing i just wanted to know weather it was to hard or perfect save me buying one and then hating it. cheers.

oh and i have just bought a echo cnc rear rim brake and i LOVE IT its great.

Gearing is generally just a matter of opinion so someone else's views might end up being different from yours anyway. Just have to try it and see.

13t is a pretty small cog to have though, it won't help things like chain skipping and wear...

I prefer a larger pair of toothrings though, to prevent too much chain breakage. Try 22-18 or 19 if you like a bit more heavier gear, or if you have limited space, try 20-17.

Go away and think about what you wrote there;

22:18 is a higher (harder, faster, heavier etc) gear than 22:19

At the back, a smaller ring makes things harder. at the front, it makes things easier

Think about running 10 teeth at the front and 100 at the back. You'd have to turn the cranks 10 times to spin the wheel once, but it would be super easy to do so

If you reverse the situation (100 front, 10 back) then you'd have a very high gear, which would make life rather difficult, but you'd be spinning the wheel 10 times for every rotation of the cranks

Lower gears give greater (initial, from stationary) acceleration, but lower top end

Higher gears give a higher top speed, but will be harder to push and give slower acceleration from a stand still, or low speed

Back to the OP, 16:14 is a fairly standard kind of ratio, but as Tommy D has said, a lot of it's down to personal preference. Give 16:13 a shot, and you may love it. You can always change back again if you feel 16:14 was better for you

As Dekes has said though, a larger set of rings will probably last a bit longer (as well as letting your chains live a little longer too) due to the more even, and more distributed force. Larger rings also give a little more option to fine tune a gear, so if you know exactly where you need your ratio to be, it'll be easier to achieve it

Excuse the essay, but once you know a little, and think about it a bit, it can help the same questions in the future

You misinterpreted my post. I was trying to say he should try 22-18 or 19 if he wanted a heavier gear compared to 16-14.

Bit off topic i know...

Well that isnt that bad as im running 22t on the cranks to 16t its like a bulldozer well hard sort of a bmx sort of gearing but im only got it got a couple days as i have ordered a 18t off tarty.

But i think you should be fine with it aint i understand it is that extra bit of power(it seems) but you wait till you try to pedal hop.

Lol its mad.
