StuartD
Hello, I just got my new zoot today, and its my first trials bike, as Im riding it Ive noticed that the crank arms move from side to side... and because its my first bike I dont know if this is normal or not, I wouldnt have thought it is. Heres a pic of where its moving, there seems to be a lot of play in there, Im new to the terms I think its called the bb?Any help is appreciated, thank you! Dani.
Hey, well I take it that it was factory built which, honestly means you have to go 'round and check everything is tight etc..Anyway without a video or anything it could be a loose bottom bracket or loosely fitted crank arms so what I'd do is whip out a 8mm allen key, undo the crank bolts, use a crank-extractor if necessary to get the arms off, get a BB tool and tighten the non drive side cup pretty tight then put the crank arms back on, tighten them (once again, pretty tight) then see if there's still some play. If there's still some play your BB must be broken already (which doesn't seem so far-fetched seeing as it's an onza BB).P.S: Tighten the pedals aswell. ilikeriding
You gotta tighten the 8mm allen bolts on the cranks or theyll round off, every hour of riding or so for the first couple of weeks.
StuartD
well its the thing inside the bike (bb?) thats moving, the pedals are tight and the arms are tight, im phoning the shop atm >.<
Guest
then its the bb, you will need a bb tool funnily enough ,or just take it too the shop and force them to do it, they built it, they fix it if it wasnt your fault as far as im concerned Edited August 16, 2007 by braintreetrials
basher
Sounds like you just need to tighten your bottom bracket if you dont have the tools any bike shop can do it.
Dani.
Yah, no need to phone the shop, just do what I said and it won't wobble anymore. That's assuming you have a BB tool of course.
StuartD
Im afriad I dont, although they said that they will send a free tool kit to me now, which I hope has one in it. They built/ rebuilt the bike in the shop, so everything opn it should be working fine, so is there supposed to be a collar on that side ? or is it supposed to be open? Muel
Is there a gap inside the BB shell between the bb bearing and the frame? If yes, don't ride the bike at all, ring said bike shop, tell them to send the end cap thing and get your LBS/Mate to show you how its done.If no, check cranks are tight etc.
AdamR28
You are missing the non drive side BB cup DO NOT ride it any more or it will damaged the frame beyond repair.
StuartD
Ok cheers for the replies, they said they will send the part and a free tool kit so I just gotta wait now >.<
Tomm
You are missing the non drive side BB cup DO NOT ride it any more or it will damaged the frame beyond repair.Assuming it's not already beyond repair...Those Onza BBs are unique - I think you will need to speak to where you got it from for the cup as it won't be a standard one you can get from a bike shop. To be honest though, that it shocking quality control and I'd be surprised if the frame (specifically the thread in the BB shell) is still OK. You need to bring it to their attention ASAP and explain that's how it arrived. Otherwise they will most likely claim it's not their fault, and you could end up with a useless frame. As Adam said, do NOT ride it.
Muel
As Adam said, do NOT ride it.I said it first.Don't even sit on it. Polish it, caress it, but don't ride it otherwise the thread will run away and never come back. It will also be putting the frame under stresses it was never designed to withstand. You will need a crank puller as well.
basher
lmao well spotted waddy, how the f**k can you forget to put one of them in.
StuartD
Perfect way to enter the sport with your first bike eh? They have been contacted already as I made this post, and they are sending the end cap along with a complementary tool kit, I didnt ride it a great deal, but I did a very bunny hops and endos so lets just pray its all ok Edited August 16, 2007 by StuartD
JT!
I'll be suprised if it's ok actually. What i would do is get in touch with the shop again. I'm assuming you got it online, so it's not easy to 'send back'. What i would do is tell the shop that your going to takeit to a local bike shop to have it cheaked over, and to fit the BB cup properly so that the bike is safe to ride. Then the bill will be sent to where ever you bought it from so they can pay for it.Fitting the bb without the cup on the other side means it's not supported, it more than likey ruined the threds on the other side, which makes the frame useless. This is why i suggest taking it to your local bike shop and getting them to check it over.At the end of the day it's not your fault and you should get a replacement, and you should be re-embersed for all repairs and all postage costs to send it back. Provided the outer ring of the drive side cup was tight against the BB face, any movement would be reduced/nindered further.
Muel
It all depends how it has been ridden, it sounds as if he has ridden it up and down the road and realised the cranks flew about. Hopefully. If it has done a load of drop offs and stuff then it is more likely to have been damaged isn't it? There are quite a few threads even on one side of a bb shell so it just be able to hold a persons weight I hope. The shop should short you out really, first stop is to get in touch with them. And its my first trials bike, so I cant do most of the stuff yet, and even the stuff I can do is of poor quality atm after been off a bike for about a year .So no drop offs were done, no backhops, I did bunny hops that must have been about half a foot high, and endos that were about 1 foot high :$ . I think the bike is undamaged, touch wood.
