"use the search" posts annoy me to be honest, but for this one, if you look inthe motorbike thread, I'm almost 100% sure there is the answer to every question you want to know, plus there is a million other interesting things in there that will help you (Y)

I read the whole topic when i was looking at buying my bike and it helped loads.

Good luck mate (Y)

Right, decentish bike will be £6-700, but it depends if you want geared or twist 'n' go.

Google "CBT traning plymouth" or something, and see what you find, should be roughly £100.

Insurance should be near the £400 mark for TPF&T. Petrol will be £15ish a week depending on how much you ride.

A good sporty looking geared bike is a Yamaha TZR, but they cost in excess of a grand. Im getting a Aprilia RS50, but thats plainly because theyre fairly cheap, and one of the quickest 50s. Good Dirt bike style or supermoto style bikes are Derbi Senda SMs or yamaha DT50.

Good twist and go would be peugeot speedfight or yamaha aerox, or gilera runner depending on budget.

How much and im going to have to spend for a decentish one? - Always buy a branded bike don't go for any chineese shit, my good running 1st ped was 180quid ran like a dream was a bit of a joke though! but a decent like piagio or pug will be like 600-900 a geared "propper" bike is like +1k really.

i dont want to spend more then £400 really..ive been looking on ebay but as i have no clue whats good e.t.c i dont know..

Yea it can easily be done, my scooter was just practibility not like pimp my ride or whatvever, keep an eye out track bikes contact the buyers whos bikes dont sell e.t.c. and you'll find a propper bargin in the end

also, how do i go about gettin my cbt? - Walk into your local motorbike shop and ask them, if not yellow pages e.t.c.

how much does that cost roughly? - Bowt 100pounds give or take a score

how much would it cost me to run a bike every month/year? Mine was... 2.50 - 4quid a week for 6miles a day riding... not too shabby seeing as bus fare was 2.50 daily and i had to get up early and wait with sweaty smelly old people

whats a good bike? Pug, Speedfights 1/2, Aprillia's but out of your 400quid price range

If you think you'll want a car, then DONT BOTHER with a scooter, its just a waste of money. unless you live SERIOUSLY in the middle of nowhere, you don't need it either. I survived with my pushbike for an extra year on top of most people as i couldnt even get a provisional till i was 18 for medical reasons.

If you like motorbikes, and want to ride them in the future, then fair enough, try and find a decent 2nd hand geared 50 and have some fun.

Here is the problem with mopeds in my eyes!

With a 50cc bike it is easy to reach top end, very easy! Most teenagers buy them get on the road and thrash the living lights out of them. When you buy a 2nd hand bike it has usualy had a good old spanking from the first owner. For £400 you would be lucky to get a 2nd hand bike, possible but very unlikely. when you buy a ped for £400 it will have had the dodahs shagged out of it and although it may look tidy and well presented on the outside you dont know the engine is shagged untill you are forking out £600 for a engine rebuild. so in the first place you might as well have wacked that on your first price packet and bought some thing a bit newer!

Secondly... mopeds are not what you want to be cutting corners on, no matter how well you ride or how observant you are there is always a risk of comming off! And you dont really want to be riding a bike which could cause more harm to yourself if you are to come off of it. in my local area 4/5 kids a year are killed on 50's and my area is not exactly the biggest of places, no where near as big as portsmouth is (i think i rember reading you were from that way alex!) so i wouldnt really advise buying a £400 bike!

You will also need to pay a good packet for some gloves jacket and bash hat! You will also want some good quality jeans and preferably not a pair of DC's! You may feel a dick riding round in a jacket but it only takes 1 meter at 30MPH to grind you arse down to the bone, imagine that on your hips, elbows shoulders ect! so it is worth paying out for some decent quality kit!

Then you have to pay your CBT and Provisinal. thats aproximately £160 all in! Then you have to pay insureance, I was going to pay £450 on a brand new RS and that was a offer from the dealer if i was to buy it new! So its not a cheap job!

I dont mean to piss on your chios or anything but I was in the same mind as you! I went out and bout a RX50 dirt bike and was like hey its only a years worth! Then i went out to a dealer and the told me the whole story! What i have just said above is pretty much what blokes who had been riding for a good 20 years told me! and i would much rather take thier advise over a friend who has been on the road a month and thinks its great! When i looked at getting on the road i was looking to pay no more than a grand for the bike and the same on kit ect! Then i got talking to people who knew thier stuff and that 2k went up to 4k!

I would say its much better getting around on your own for another year! Nick Cater told me to buy a bus ticket when i suggested the idea and i was in the mind of yeah whatever but when you actually go out speak to the people who know thier stuff they will even most probably advise you in the same way!

Hope thats of some help to you mate!

exactly, you hit top wack very easily. thats what i meant, they are usually constantly working as hard as they can causing mega wear on the engine...

Unlike the new GSXR's R6's ect they cannot hit and stay at thier top speed therefore not causing as much wear and tear to the engine.

Maybe i was a bit unclear when i first said it but does what i said make sence now?

You can't on the gixers and R6's without shitting your pants anyway!

I'm glad i didnt get a scooter and waited the extra year. It made getting the car even better.

No surley the manafactures calculate the tolerences and stuff on the engine and calculate how to keep all the engine parts within there maximum tolerence alot easier than something with gears which you can ragg right into the red line everytime because you can only twist it.... not slip the clutch or red line every gear change on a cold engine... scooters never go full wack on a cold engine

yeh haha i wouldnt like to find out either!

simpson...

i know what you are saying but tats one reason why i would not buy a used 50. Your views on the subject may be diffrent to mini but surely a yamaha areox for example which has been ridden around for five years with the throttle pinned (which no not all lads do but a lot do) will have engine wear which will overall effect the amount of money you will spend on servicing repairs ect.

Like i said earlier these are my views on the subject and i would rather be extra causious than run the risk of getting a shagged moped!
