Basically, i have a panasonic Mini DV camera, which is a couple o years old now, im now starting full time employment and can basically afford something new?

I was looking at a HDD camcorder, but have no idea where to start, but all i know is i would prefer FIREWIRE cable output, and the camera needs to work with a mac and final cut express?

No point. Mini DV is the best system around. The only real benefit from using a HDD is that there's no risk of something happening to the recording head or any of the junk inside the cassette compartment. Theoretically you can record more video onto a HDD camera but you then have to transfer and store it onto your PC. Storing video on cassettes is so much easier, cheaper and safer.

Finally, if you are going to get one of them silly hdd cameras, keep well away from Sony AVCHD HDD models.

Im currently using a JVC Evario G HDD camera. Lovely little thing, get nearly 5 hours on slightly better then DVD quality with out taking anything of the hard drive. Running extra batteries and a fish eye. So easy to use as well. Also will work on both PC and Mac, and i believe final cut supports the file extensions(MOD) If not drivers are on the supplied Disc which should enable to program to use them.

Darren Video.mpg as an idea of the quality of the video created on it.

I personally think you should wait until you can afford to go to HD, as you are planning to invest in an already old technology. Everything is going to HD now so you might as well wait for the prices to drop a bit more OR take the plunge now.

Getting a SD camera with HDD had no advantages over MiniDV other than having some more space.
