Onza-Trials
Does it matter you cracked it just get a new one now and make it in line with the steerer tube! well i don't i have spacers on top of it !
Echo-Scott
I have cracked my stem aswel but mine is just about level with the top of the forks so i don't think you stem hanging over will make to much of a differance.
Tommy d
I wouldn't keep using a stem if it's cracked, might break and that can mean nasty injuries...Anyway, as I understand it, the top of the stem has to be slightly higher than the top of the steerer tube of the forks. This is so that the top cap pulls down against the stem and keeps the headset tight. If the top of the forks was higher than the top of the stem, the top cap would just be pushing against the forks and doing nothing (because it's attatched to the star nut inside the forks).I hope that made sense.Anyway the stem only wants to be a few mm higher, not loads higher than the forks, otherwise there won't be so much contact area.Maybe it's best to have a spacer above the stem? Anyone who actually knows want to fill us in?

poopipe
Anyone who actually knows want to fill us in?obviously you don't want a big gap above the top of the steerer but you need a few mm or the stem won't clamp properly, whether you get the from a spacer on top or not doesn't make any difference. But then - why on earth would you want to?!
