Charlie Jennings
What distros did you try, and what versions ?I personally had only one problem installing Ubuntu on my computer, I didn't have the right screen resolution but it was an easy fix... and I think the newer versions of the installer rectified that problem and a lot of other compatibility problems... Then installing stuff is the other problem, well Ubuntu solves it with an application that lists some 22 000 free applications and it's as easy as clicking it and the program downloads it and installs it on it's own...Well the fact the OS X works straight out of the box is a bit of an understatement, it only has to work with a handful of computers... And apparently certain PCs can run OS X, but they are quite few.Yeah, I've seen a pc running OSX. It sucked. When you hovered over the dock it would skip all over the place... Tomm
What distros did you try, and what versions ?SuSe 10.1 ages ago - Supposedly the multimedia version of Linux. So when the sound didn't work, that was annoying.Fedora FC4 again a while ago - I think most things worked but I couldn't access my NTFS partition (I believe that has been fixed now?)Ubuntu (latest stable release about 2 weeks ago) - Network just will not work - so no internet access. And the programs are a big funny - the MP3 player refused to decode MP3s which was a bit dumb. The only one that's ever worked properly was Knoppix live. But I'd be after a more permanent thing, and though I know you can convert the LiveCD into a full install, Knoppix didn't seem as nice to use as Ubuntu/SuSe anyway. At the end of the day, none of them worked as well as Windows, so I just went back to that.

They all work ok up to a point but there'll be one thing you need to do that you can't - either cos your hardware isn't supported properly yet (eg. wireless and wacom tablet on ubuntu) or there's no software to do whatever it is you want to do (hence the existence of parallels and bootcamp)

Tomm
amen, it's same with Macs really. No it's not. I use a Mac and I happen to like it. If you don't play games, Macs can run most things, and they are nice. Whether you think that trade-off of 'niceness' is worth the fact that you might not be able to run some obscure programs is up to you. I think it is. Every time I use OS X it makes me smile how nice it is to use, which is quite sad but true

Janson
If mac users want they can install Windows, Unix and Linux on one computer.Completely different story though.I think the aidz can't be cured with an operating system.i like macs, but what REALLY grinds my gears is the finder. the way it doesn't arrange files and folders how i want it to. i want the detailled list, and i want the folders at the top in alphabetical order, then the files in order. just like windows. the f**king finder treats the folders just like files and adds them to the mix. = pain in the ass. JonMack
I know it's not quite the same, but Finder> Apple + Ngo to the folder you want to arrange that wayApple + 2 > click "Kind"I know it's not the same, but it's alright.Oh, and make sure you click the red cross, not Apple + W, otherwise the window style wont save, for some strange reason. Krisboats
Mac's currently have no viruses. PC's currently have about 117,000 viruses. Get writing.Anyway. people will just report it and Apple will do a system update and fix it.Actually, theres been a few mac virus's and theres quite a few people who try and make them. For example beginning of novemeber there was a poorly written replicating virus written specifically for intel-macs and it was called Macarena. The only thing that really stopped this virus infecting more than 50-100 machines is that the author had put such a crap replicating system so it wasn't too wide spread.Theres also been several security holes in osx throughout the releases like the hole in tiger that allowed for the automatic installation and activation of widgets by websites that had the required code on them. All the user would have to do is make a virus label it as a widget and have it install and run itself automatically. What i wrote wasn't a competition, it was fact. One day the so called "invulnerable" macs will have a virus written for them. Apple don't just fix things either... they usually deny its existence first

531joshua
Currently have no viruses. I'm using Norton, despite everyone saying it's sh*t, maybe it's just the fact that you're not careful enough?Anyway, havn't had a virus in a while, and when I did last time, just deleted it straight away.Think I got it from limewire. Its an absolute resource hog. Also, one I had a trojan that it couldn't remove and even though it tried and failed to remove it, it still plastered by desktop with about 20 of its 'I refuse to minimize, but I will close only to come back again' warning notifications. That was f**king annoying. I just resorted to uninstalling Norton just so I could carry on doing what I was doing until I could be bothered to go into Safe mode and do its job for it.*Just made that up - but its still a f**k load Edited August 9, 2007 by ManxTrialSpaz

Mike Deere
Who the HELL said that Mac's can't get viruses? There's currently somewhere in the region of 700-800 viruses that affect Macintosh computers according to McAfee. Ok it's a fraction of the number of viruses that affect PCs but it's still a large figure, especially when you consider the market share of each.Surely that means Apple are committing false advertising?
