Get a copy of contact and watch the speed trials from Bike 2000, and compare that with bike shows now...

Yeah but look at the number of people who went to the bike shows. It used to be a lot of people, then it gradually got fewer and fewer.I know a couple of people who rode bmx at either the 2000 or 2001 bike show and then rode again at the last one before it closed and they said there was so few people there compared to the others. I don't think the bike show trials turnout is a reflection on trials.... i think its a reflection on the show.

You said about tv appearances, well i was in a bar in town and looked up to realise martyn ashton was plastered all over the tv screens riding his demo rig. That was on for about an hour and they stuck it on again later in the evening.

I think if were not careful it could be a dying sport but at the moment no................... For the soul reason of the sport taking so long to master we have lots of riders for a long time into there 30's or later anyway if we don't get the coverage we won't have new riders who will master the sport :D imo

Tom peace out

That doesn't hold true though. While attendences may have dropped, the BMX arenas were getting massive crowds while the trials shows had empty seats in the stands. Maybe more riders were into BMX I don't know, but trials had gone from too few seats to too many. That to me shows a decline in interest by the people attending the show.

I don't know what kind of crowds the trials show gets at the Cycle show now, but I think they're probably about the same as the Bike Show at it's peak. Therefore I don't think trials has peaked or that it's getting better, more that it's getting back to where it was before.

I think the trials would have got a much better crowd if the shows were at decent times. The bike show was so small this year that there wasn't much point for people with a casual interest in trials to stick around until 5pm for the show. Also the first show was too early that most people (including me) missed it!

Maybe that bikeshow demostrated trials standing in the cycling industry more than anything else.

I'm not suprised really then. Every bike show i've been to i've arrived at around 11 and left by 4. Theres always loads of people starting to leave after 4-4.30'ish.

What are local councils liek when it comes to Demo's/Public Displays and such? Anyone have any experience of this?

I have two opinions on ours.

Firstly they liked the idea. Thought it was good but not as a stand alone, it needed to be part of another bigger event.

Secondly they didn't help one bit. They just gave us permission with proviso's of, we need such and such insurance and certain height barriers and certain height structures with first aiders etc etc. The first one we had, they helped us move some obstacles for it, but then they didn't after that.

Talk to a member of MAD for better insight + info though ;) MAD is the UK's number 1 trials display team
