The Stig
Hey guys i have heard of a few people using different fluids to oil in there maguras like water and even vodka apparently it makes them less spongy?? any comments?
ogre
water makes maguras feel snappier because it's thinner than oil theres less resistance bit poo in the winter if you don't put antifreeze in though.
bakewell
i'm going to keep an eye on this topic, as i've only used standard oil, once on holiday i split a hose and used cooking oil when i re-bleed the system, work ok to tie me over. grantallsop
Use water and anti-freeze, its good because anti-freeze will stop it freezing and heating up and water is snappyer as someone just said
El Cristoff
water and anti-freeze ***! makes the brake less spongey and you can bleed with water without a bleed kit (bleed them in the bath)
Ash-Kennard
pretty sure it will be the same 'spongyness' whatever liquid you use and it wont compress unless you have air in the system, then you have a shit bleed. water is just less dence than oil so pulls easier. but aslong as you have a good bleed, it doesnt really matter what you use.oh and do not use d.o.t as it will rape the seals
chris13
small tip to keep air out of the system iincluding the air desolved in the water. very simple, boil the water before you bleed it. pour it into a jug add the anti freeze, and bleed with that. James-M
Another one to say go with water...I've got the Magura Oil in the rear and when I press the lever it's abit squidgy, whereas the water bleed on the front is very good, releases quicker and doesn't flex at all. jandamna
waters alright, but use diesel if you like the feel of the maggy oil, cause maggy oil = diesel ! it works, trust me
bakewell
milk is good i've heard. doesn't compress as much as other liquids. but when your hose splits cheese comes out!!!!! ok that last bit was a joke, don't try it please kids. Dave Anscombe
i used wd40.......its thinner than water thus the lever responce is a lot quicker, just ask any one who has used my rear brake Edited July 30, 2007 by mrkoxx

bakewell
thats why you add the anti freeze the clue is in the title
chris13
with the water method, why not sub merge the brakes in a bucket of water and anti freeze, put the clear tube and seringe on the lever side, and jsut suck the water in? then put the grub screw back in the caliper end, remove the tube and put the screw in the lever and ur done? seems too simple, would it work? chris13
All that would do is warm the water up and give you slightly less to bleed the brake with.nope, water has air disolved in it, the only way to get rid of that, is to boil it, try it, will give an even stiffer brake!
