mikejrsmith
hello everyone, this topic is about how old everyone was when they started trials and whether age makes a difference to your riding ability, i wanted to take up trials when i was about 15, after spending lots of money on a cannondale frame and building it up myself it got stolen from outside my house after about a month of having it this ment my mum wasnt willing for me to get another bike and instead i spent an awful lot of time doing drugs and generally lazing about! after 5 years without exercise i have decided to go clean and thought rather than paying for a gym membership why not get a couple of bikes, i have bought a team mad phase 1.3 and in less than 2 weeks i have seen my balance greatly improve and am now starting to be able to get on the rear wheel (about 3 hops!) but at the end of the day my lower back aches quite a bit! im worried that this is old man syndrome as i am now 20! is it common as ive seen other members discussing aches? and i seem to be improving at a much faster rate than when i was younger maybe because the bike is smaller by comparison or im putting in more effort, what do people think? DOES AGE MATTER? and how old is too old?mike
Alex.loves.boys
20's finetheres riders out there far older than that. You will hurt becuase you havent done excerise. My mate darrens 23?24?dont stop him i can tell you that. And ive heard of people over on OTN being in there 40's and riding. Rich Hill
No way just age matter, look at Hans Rey he's like 40 and i bet you he can out ride a good majority of the people on trials forum Well he can definatly ride trials better than me
Tommy d
I don't reckon it's age or anything. My lower back sometimes aches too, I reckon in my case it's cos I ride quite a short bike and pull the front end up a lot, just means those muscles do a lot of work. They will probably strengthen up and get less sore.Good luck with riding etc
JT!
I can't belive your 20 and you think your old.I'm 20. And there's dozens of riders who are in their mid 20's. And a good handfull who'll be in their 30's.It's not an issue.
mikejrsmith
I can't belive your 20 and you think your old.hey thanks for the replys i dont really think im old in life just in starting so late, when i was looking at the classifications for comps not that im going to enter any beginner is age 6 - 10!! i wonder if its the childs choice at that age! i hope to have a long time riding yet and after watching everyones video's cant wait for my skills to improve! if anyone else is starting near portsmouth b intouch!! MadManMike
I'm 23 and the aches are there but the more you ride the less they effect you - you'll ache at first through the vigorous exercise but you get used to it!

scott_ftw
i think if yur past 18 and you cant raise some eyebrows its pretty pefetic to start then many wont agree with this but its too late to start something like that because it will take you much longer to get good at it compared to us young ones.i would quit at 18 if i wernt onto something good my opinion, scott x

2sixstreet
Haha, I STARTED at 32. Not been riding that long but i'm not giving away my current age. I absolutley love it and plan to keep going for quite a while yet. I do have over 10 yrs of XC and road racing under my belt though so its not like I dont know what a bike is. Good to see you on the straight and narrow.
scousertrials
Yes I agree 18 is to old to start riding (or any sport for that matter) Biggest load of bollox ive ever heard. Krisboats
Biggest load of bollox ive ever heard. Where is your evidence for that daming statement. TITI'm pretty sure that was sarcastic It had the rolleyes and everything Yeah, the lower back pains are normal when your just starting out. Hell, even if you just spend a couple of hours trying to improve your gapping distance after you've been riding a while you still get aches in your back. Its because your muscles aren't used to it. It'll fade though as you get better and i'm 20 myself... i love riding.

kid creole
I started at 20 and im gonna be 22 in less then a month , i suppose im getting old now but i still dont feel like i am , i just feel the same as when i was 18. i think ive got resonably good in the time ive been riding but being my age i cant just chuck my self of high walls cos ive got work to think about if i hurt myself , thats one of the reasons i wish i started when i was at school but i wouldnt of been able to afford a bike then anyway. robster
I'm 36 I Started 6 months ago loving every minuet, Ache like hell for a day or so after a comp but it is well worth it. I am crap but I enjoy it I ride inter but would be better suited to novice but that means I will be beaten every time by my little lad who is only nine. :$ He would never let me live that one down.JP
mikejrsmith
i think if yur past 18 and you cant raise some eyebrows its pretty pefetic to start thenim not quite sure what you mean by that scott maybe i wont end up as the best competition rider ever lived but im just doing it for fun and exercise, thanks everyone it would seem i still have plenty of time, i know what you mean about not being able to afford a bike when you were younger....and i know what you mean about not being able to cripple yourself for time off school im not trying to make an age devision, this has really given me more incentive to get out today and stay on the back wheel all day! i saw mcinnes video yesterday and for 13 he really has some talent!i think weve answered the question that age doesnt matter maybe in 6months ill update with my progress,o and f*** the aches!mike

joshball
Well i dont think that you can be too old is if your body can withstand the bumps and bangs.I have only started and i am 16.And i was worried about sore wrists but that is just part and parcel of trials. In herefordshire there is a 35 year old that has just started i have found on here and that is 15 years older then you.Feel sorry for him.Joking.Josh
Brian Bleech
I'm pretty sure that was sarcastic It had the rolleyes and everything I was being serious, DEADLY SERIOUS! 20 is not too old if you enjoy it and it keeps you healthy (it's also way better than the gym). I am 27 myself and still ride loads, plus I have also started bmxing too. Yeah some people at work find it funny but they spend every night watching soaps, f**k that!I do feel very old at 24 with all the little kiddies sidehopping houses and barely being able to move in the morning sometimes... but you get over it!bloody young 'uns
