i'm a level 5 vegan, i don't eat anything that casts a shadow.

where do i stand morally?

Haha, just got back from the simpsons movie, not as good as I was expecting, but still a laugh.

I'm a bit of a shit vegitarian to be honest, as prawn and any one else that knows me will tell you. haha, but hey, I'm not up tight and all that shit, I'd just rather avoid meat, no big deal.

As said above, quit complaining about this bloody bull, its like the way one white city kid'll go missing and it'll be a fecking national tradgody with 20 minutes of the news devoted to it, then at the end they'll be like, "in other news 38 people were killed in a train crash in *insert eastern european country here*" then just carry on with no more coverage of it.

People dont actualy care that much, they just like to think they do. meh.

I think theres more serious issues in the world that needs media attention like this but never gets it.

Ok, say we went down the route of not killing it...ok, the risk of cross infection to other cows is small, but still a possibility. If this happened, they'd be mass-culling of hundreds of cows and then the media would cast its words of 'Why wasn't this cow killed when the tests proved positive?' as what happens with pretty much anything.

Its called eliminating at the source, and as much as it is 'cruel' it had to happen. I know I won't be losing any sleep over this and it would have been forgotten about by next week...

Surely if your kid went missing you'd want coverage? A train crash happens there and then...a kid that goes missing can bring up internation attention and could be found...surely its the better route?

Yeah, sorry, bad example. But you must get what I mean, it doesn't make this cow deserve to live any more than any other cow or whatever just because it's got a load of press coverage. I'm pretty shite at getting my feelings across through wrighting, so I'll stop making a tit of myself. haha. Like you say, it'll be forgoten by next week. Lets just go have a burger :)

Go figure

Are you capable of rational thought?

Dude, you obviously do not know anything about farmers! We always make sure that are Animals are in good health, after all as you say they are there for making money, and if one dies yes you loose profit.

I know alot of farmers who hate having to get rid of animals, i know i do, i would not have the heart to kill any of our cows myself, and nor does my uncles whos cows they are!

And at the moment with farming (especialy where animals are concerned ie, Milk, Beef, Sheep, Pigs etc) in such a poor state a loss of one animal can be a huge hit to a farmer, and usualy if a farm catches TB for example it is normaly not just one animal that will go down with it!

God i hate little townie f**kers who do not understand what being a farmer involves!!!!!!!

Adam

Perhaps what I said sounded a bit harsh towards the farmers, but if you keep animals to sell for slaughter you can't really claim to care about them as much as a Hindu monk would. So you don't have the heart to kill one yourself but you would sell them to someone who does? - Isn't that the same thing really?

I hope that last comment wasn't aimed at me but I suspect it was. I do understand a little about farming and I'm not a townie.

People dont actualy care that much, they just like to think they do. meh.

That's quite philosophical for trials forum :D

Having been to school with a load of farmers, and having lived in a farming community, a lot of farmers do get attached to some of their animals, but more than that, like Adam said - if you're a farmer and your cattle get culled to prevent the spread of TB, that's it - your livelihood's gone, you're f**ked. With the Hindus, they prayed that Shambo would come back as a human, and at the risk of making it sound stupid, they could claim he had and they can carry on happy as larry. I know NOW it meant a lot to them, but the whole reincarnation deal means they can basically stick a tag on whatever they want and claim it to be whatever it needs to be for their lives to be better.

You can put all the arguements across you like, it is just a bull.

I mean is this one bull going to affect you that much?

Will your life end because of it?

No.

I'm sure the guy who owned it will be upset, as would I.

Seriously, it's one bull - millions are butchered for meat, one more surely isn't the end of the world...

a lot of farmers do get attached to some of their animals,

fight...temptation....of....sheep.......joke....

in seriousness though, you've hit the nail on the head after that. Its not the same as; but its like peoples shops being robbed or a carpenter losing his tools. Even if it is only 1 bull its still "stock" and in farming its not like nuts and bolts where they are ten a penny.

I mean is this one bull going to affect you that much?

Me personally? hell no

The family? Of course it is!

I can sympathise with the family for loss of their stock due to something out of their control, BUT there were ALOT more farmers throughout the UK who lost A LOT more livestock to foot + mouth when that came about. Why this family is expecting the laws to change for one is beyond me. Yes its unfortunate but rules are rules, every business suffers at some point.

it's quite good to cover up the avatar's and names in this thread and reas the replies. It's almost always possible to figure out the posts made by people under 15/16 and the posts made by older people...

Sorry, lets go back to the difference between killing animals and killing plants...

Whats the difference? Both are living organisms, both go through the same molecular decomposition.

Ah, I've got it. People choose not to eat meat through guilt or pomposity, not morals. An animal is easy to relate to when it dies because it is similar to a human. A plant, despite being genetically almost identical to an animal, does not provoke basic human emotions because humans cannot relate to it.

This is easily demonstated with several types of animal. I know plenty of people who would hate you for killing a 'cute puppy' because it was vicious, but would determindly kill a frog, or a spider at first sight, unprovoked. The link? Humans can relate to cute puppies but not slimey frogs or creepy spiders.

Animals do not suffer when being killed for food, in fact the lives they lead are far more wholesome and satisfying (through EU law) than they would be living in the wild.

No vegetarian has any qualms about killing plant life; how are they to know a plant doesn't experience pain? What is pain? It is your bodies comunication to the brain to inform of injury. A plant will have similar mechanisms, some plants can even recoil or release a sting to deter predators. These reactions would be caused by a similar construct as 'pain'.

Lastly, next time some hot-headed vegetarian is preaching how killing cows is wrong (with his mouth that has teeth in it designed for tearing through meat) ask him why his shoes are made of leather.
