Stripping

Stripping anodising is pretty fun though. Loads of cool smoke, fizzy bubbles and suddently the caustic soda mix turns the colour you're stripping off the component.

Wouldn't breathe in the smoke, or get any of the caustic soda on me, especially after seeing what it did to my rims, colour just ran off like it was water-based paint. :S

so it actually digests the metal for as long as you keep it in the solution?

if so, i wonder if vince uses this technique to get his bike lighter, as in leave the rims in until they get really thin :P

Yeah it does. It's fierce as f**k.

And I bet Vincey Pie showers his bike in caustic soda after every ride. :P

What sort of mix do you use for caustic soda? I know it says on the back of the box but my mate tried to get the anodising off his bars and he left them in the mix for a few days and the paint still hadn't completely come off.

Also, nitromores won't get the paint off my frame, its a t-pro which are apparently powder coated

Does caustic soda strip paint aswell ? or just anodising.

I want to do my frame but nitromorse takes ages to get off and leaves paint in welds.

mike W :)

You need to slap more of it on then. It takes about an hour to strip a whole frame of its paint. Without leaving any little bits on.

meh i'm so tempted to remove anodizing from everything i've got at home right now... sounds like fun!

does it leave a rough enough surface to apply paint directly?

It leaves an ideal surface to paint. Degrease it and it's minted. Just like acid-dipping before spraying, but with caustic soda..
