For Those With Hd Tv's

i'm looking at buying one, but i'm worried as none of my inputs will be high def, (ps2, dvd player etc) will it all look absolute dogshit?

it's got hdmi inputs, but i don't see the point running normal stuff down one of those cables, as it wont make the input any better.

so if anyone could offer some advice on this, i'd be reeeally happy, because i don't want to drop £300 on something that will make everything look like shit.

dogshit....not quite, but it will look a lot worse than your current tv unless you upgrade your cables as-well.

i ran my dreamcast on my 32" HDTV using a scart and it looked like a phone (all square and jaggy), yet when it's on my 14" portable it looks super sweet.

if your dvd player is fair good and has a wide screen setting etc then that should look fine, ps2 will be worse imo but still playable.

yeh as far as i'm concerned.

if i was buying a new tv now i wouldn't buy the one i've got. i'd probably go for a CRT again simply becasue i've got rid of all my HD using equipment.

HD isn't worth the extra money if you aren't going to use it any time soon, and as i said, it'll probably give you a worse experience than the same size CRT that will cost half the money.

i've got no room for a crt really, it needs to be an lcd really, and i'm a bit f**ked as far as getting a non hd one goes now, might as well take the plunge, i'm using the red, yellow and white cables for my ps2, which i think are component cables, and a scart for dvd. is it going to look unwatchably bad?

red white and yellow are just RGB, not component. (RGB is like component for SCART but it's not the same as actual component cables which are the RGB equivalent of HDMI i think)

yeh i confused myself a little there as-well....

anyway, i think the DVD-->SCART-->HDTV will look alright, maybe above average depending on your dvd player.

the PS2-->RGB-->HDTV i would expect to look pretty dire, but it'll still be playable, just not very pretty to look at.

if you are getting a flat panel anyway, then you might as-well get a HDTV one as it will look exactly the same as a standard one.

Red white and yellow are composite cables: the yellow takes the video signal and the red and white deal with the two channels of stereo sound (can't remember which is which).

Component is different and uses three cables purely to carry the video signal splitting it up something along the lines of the amount of red, the amount of blue, and the brightness of the picture, which can be recombined to give a proper picture. Component video is capable of transmitting a high def signal.

I think it may be quite similar to the rgb used in scart, but scart has extra pins which can also do composite video, and sound if i remember right.

Andy.
