T.McMillan
hey there guys i was just admiring Ali C's czar bike pictures and i also read a thread cant remember what one it was, that he uses hollowtech cranks, can you tell me abit about how to make them trialsable?, also do you know what is the difference between hollowtech 1 and 2? i have been looking on CRC and they only seem to do hollowtech 2, please help or do you recommend anything different than the hollowtech i really want something light, pretty strong thats why i kinda want to go to hollowtech, but dont know enough about them, i heard i will have to do some machining but that will be okcheers thanks for your timetom Edited July 14, 2007 by speedyjustice
Guest
as far as i know you need something to stick on the crank, to screw your freewheel onto?but yeh, I'd like to see too....
Tomm
I think difference is that Hollowtech I used octalink BBs, whereas Hollowtech II use the special all-in-one crank/axle/spindle
T.McMillan
HELP?!
Ali C
the difference between hollowtech 1 and 2 is that hollowtech 1 is 3 peice with an internal bb, hollowtech 2 is two piece with an external bb and the axle is pernamently bonded to the drive side crank. You cant make hollowtech 2 cranks into screw on cranks, but hollowtech 1 cranks can be machined down and a threaded adapter bonded on to accept freewheels or cogs. Mike W
I used to have hollowtech cranks on my planet x, they are splined rather than threaded but extremely light and seem pretty stiff, only thing i didnt like was octalink tapers for replacing bbs:)mike 'W
liam-pantera
you could allways use a midleburn 22 tooth sprocket and a standard bash guard ?
Zordon
I should give you a warning though. My mate had some Lx hollowtechs 1 machined to accept freewheel/screw-on sprocket. They lasted only few months until they cracked. Maybe the machining was badly done and it took too much crank material out, i don't know. I'm also using machined Lx now and I'm worrying a bit. RobinJI
I'd imagine that would be the machining rather than the cranks, I mean, I had some of the LX hollowtech I's on my old downhill bike for ages and other than the anodising wearing through really quickly, they were like new until the day the bike got nicked. If I ever have a problem with my racefaces I'm thinking about some hones if there's enough chainring clearance, and maybe see if they could be machined to accept a middleburn bash/spider combo. T.McMillan
Why are the HOLLOWTECH I so hard to get compared to HOLLOWTECH II? did they just discontinue them all?

RobinJI
07 Deore05 Deore06 Deore05 LX03 XT04 XTThink that's about your lot as to what you can get hollowtech 1s in now.basically there's just the 3 cranks there, the 04 XT is just re-branded as the 05 LX, and then again, as the 06 deore. and the 03 XT eventually found its way to deore by 05. Then there's the 07 deore, which is very similar to the 04 XT, just with a few cosmetic changes. Edited July 15, 2007 by Dont you Just Hate it When... Zordon
They discontinued manufacturing hollowtech 1 crank at the upper class levels (xtr,xt,lx, not sure about dewhores) and, at the same time, upgraded lower classes from square tapers to hollowtech 1. So if you don't find any second hand, have a look at, for instance, alivios.

RobinJI
Nah, shimano don't do ISIS, they're all octalink, count the splines if you're unsure, 8=octalink 10=ISISOh yeah, just to confuse things further, the name hollowtech 1 refers the the fact the crank arm is a hollow forged crank, the octalink fitting is a completely separate thing, you can get octalink cranks that aren't hollowtech 1, and you can get hollowtech 1 cranks that are square taper.
