Sutty22
My front rim is the machined echo rim (as shown in the pic). I've noticed a few people have drilled their sidewalls and stuff and was wondering about taking some material out of my rim. I was thinking about cutting out the slots that are machined in at the moment. The question I have is, Would the weight reduction be worth the effort and loss of strength. I'm not particularly hard on my front wheel but I haven't gone crazy about weight anywhere else on my bike. Any pros and cons anyone has would be gratefully received. Cheers, Sutty
Ash-Kennard
aslong as you dont go nuts and take like the entire squares out or anything it should be alright Edited June 23, 2007 by ash-kennard
King C
I reccon taking out all the squares would weaken it far too much. Me thinks doing one then missing one will be plenty strong and will still look decent.
Mat Smith!
Just do the sidewalls were every spoke is, then in the middle of the machined bit, dont make them too big though.Matx

Muel
I would drill the side walls, I wouldn't cut the squares out, but you could drill holes in the middle of each square? Biggest drill bit I have is 13mm though and you would have to take the spokes out.Drill and countersink each hole in the sidewall of your rim. I would drill where each spoke is, and in the middle of each pair, but mark it all out first orit looks all wierd. Then countersink them all. Then you would have a half echo 05 rim, half Onza Hog. Nick Garland
I would not touch that rim with a drill. The 2005 models were weak I found, I destroyed one in 3 weeks. Dented in 3 hours of having it. A mate of mine snapped one completely.

Beau Forrest said "These rims were the strongest rear rim i have ever ran, mine had 5 flat spots, 16 dents and it has held 6 grinds and is still going strong to this day. Hasn't needed a re-built or owt. However this was over a good 12 months of solid heavy riding. It did eventually die but what do you expect."These rims will last a long time on the rear. My front one never gave me any trouble either.I wouldn't say drill it on the rear but deffo on the front.Danny.

Nick Garland
Be safer to take the spokes out incase you go through the rim quicker than you expect and managle a lot of them. My friend did this however he used a 20mm holesaw I think.

Metal
What a front rim? I could understand a rear but no-one dents a front rim.Drill it. I dented my front rim on a pallet, so it can be done. To be fair it is a hog with the drilled sidewalls.

I would say drilling the sidewalls is fine, but dont go anywhere near the squares.
Muel
I dented my front rim on a pallet, so it can be done. To be fair it is a hog with the drilled sidewalls.Well in that case, drill it.You either fell off, or messed up, you can't dent a front rim just tapping on stuff. I only bent my wheel slightly when I was trying to learn to tap. It when very wrong and I went over the bars.I'm out of this thread, I would drill it every time but clearly other people think I'm wrong.
