What version of Windows you using? Did you install the drivers before plugging it in? I assume the instructions would tell you what to do, but on mine, you HAVE to install the drivers before plugging in the USB port otherwise it doesn't work. Remove all the automatically installed stuff in device manager, run the install program and THEN plug it in when it says. Mine ain't the official MCE one though, so it might be different.

im running xp not sure on model or year mind?, i plugged it in device manager came up but couldnt install it, the instructions are total shite to be fair, just say plug it in and no driver cd is supplie or needed apperently. its the original microsoft remote

cant remeber where device manager is :$ , but there is no installation software so it has to be connected , even when not connected the drivers statte the same message .

does the same on a similar pc set up downstairs.

are you using media center with vista? can't help you otherwise.

im not im afraid, does that involve changing the whole operating system??

nah I doubt you'll need to change the os. when i got my new pc (running Vista home premium with media center and a tv card) i had to reinstall the drivers to get my remote to work and then had to do it again when i hooked my freeveiw box up.

forgot to mention, mine works with everything pretty much - firefox, wmp 11, media center, divx player, vlc only thing it doesn't do is pause/play youtube and similar sites.

It would seem that it's MCE/XP Pro only:

MCE is XP Pro, it uses a common IR device driver that comes with both MCE and Pro (but Home will need the driver either ripped from an MCE or Pro disc).

Considering you're running an *illegal* copy of XP, why not just 'buy' MCE instead? That would solve all the problems. Seriously though, I have MCE and it totally rocks.

I had a spare MCE Remote from a PC we had at work - so I took it for my car. Well, I searched everywhere for drivers and found nothing. Finally I found this bit of info, thought it might be useful to somebody at some point.

This is how I got my MCE remote to work on XP Home (without any Media Center)

1. Obtain a copy of the irbus.sys, irbus.inf, and irbus.pnf files from a Windows XP Pro SP1/SP2 install.

2. Copy irbus.sys to c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers and c:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386

3. Copy irbus.inf and irbus.pnf to c:\WINDOWS\inf

4. Reboot

5. Plug in your remote IR receiver sensor (do not plug it in before this).

It works in some apps out of the box(just a few buttons - volume, mute, play etc), but you need Girder to get all to buttons to do what you want (FF, pause, etc).

From http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/input-devi...rk-xp-home.html

By the sounds of it, it shouldn't be too hard to get it to work if you know someone with either MCE or XP pro.
