I Need To Connect To Pc's Together To Swap Info Across...

I want to get files from my old pc to my new one. There is tons of stuff i want, but i'm in no rush, so slow transfers are fine with me.

If i plug my old tower into the wall and power it up etc etc, can i just use a linking cable to be able to explore whats in the main drive, through my new pc, then copy across. Basically, just make my old pc an external harddrive so i can access it and drag stuff across from it.

If i can, what cabl;e do i need. I may have one?? Or is it a special one. where do i connect the wire on the old and new pc, etc etc. The more info the beter. I know it's not difficult, but if you don't know, you need to ask!!

that's partly helpful, but i need it spelling out to me...

I need a step by step guide basically. What wire, where to put it, what to click to make it work, if i need to do any set up shite etc.

I don't know what ethernet is lol. So you get my situation!! I don't want to take things to bits...

Help lol.

Right, how old is the old comp? If it's xp or earlier (what came with it standard, it should have ethernet)

Then, buy an ethernet cable, male to male.

Plug it in the ethernet port in the back of each computer.

Open up network connections, maybe my computer.

Find the files you want, copy them over as if you were saving your porn to another place.

Further info and stuff is there, just ask on what you're not sure of.

EDIT: OR maybe just go to that link above.

Have you got a router or anything like that? If you do, just plug two NORMAL ethernet cables into it. If you don't, then you'll have to get a crossover cable from one PC to the other.

You'll need to set up Windows file + printer sharing on both computers, then share the whole of the drive of your old computer.

But like someone else said, if you can take the computer apart, it's much easier to put the old hard drive in new computer - it would probably save a lot of faff because Windows networks are a pain.

Ok then if this is easier, i'll do it. Anyone any tips!

you just need the old hard drive out.

take it out, set the jumpers to slave, (there'll be a little diagram on the actual hard drive to tell you how).

(assuming your new one is still using IDE):

Plug the old harddrive into the IDE socket that is half way along the IDE Cable (usually a big flat grey one).

Plug in a power socket (there should be a spare one somewhere in there).

Turn it on and it should recognise the old hard drive as Slave/Secondary.

Should then show up un My Computer.

You probably don't need to mess about with the jumper settings (Slave/master and all that) because most computers these days just work it all out automatically with the hard drives set to CS (cable select). So basically unscrew the hard drive from the old computer, turn the new computer off (that's quite important ;) ) and then just plug in any cables that fit :P

so the old HD is set to master at the moment. You say i should just leave it as that then tomm??? (or anyone else who wants to answer)

it'll probably just work.

if not,

there's a herd of little pins on the back of the disk near the power/IDE sockets which will have a little plastic thing or two stuck on them. Have a look at the little label on top of the disk and move the little plastic things so they match up with the CS (cable select) thingy

if that makes any sense

Yeah, do that. The old drive will probably be set to CS anyway (So you don't need to do anything with the jumper), but if the new computer doesn't recognise it, turn the computer off and change the jumper to CS, then restart.

this whole thing has made my testicles ache.

old pc with Hard drive removed... (see the grey flat cable with black plug & white plug removed from HD

New pc with HD bottom left and spare power socket...

New HD and spare power socket. there is no plug in the new pc that fits the old HD

Old HD

Cat 5 cable the only option now???

oh right

new PC is SATA, old PC is IDE

There's probably an IDE hole in the new motherboard somewhere - I'd be surprised if there wasn't

pull the cable that connected the old HD to the old motherboard out and see if it'll fit in any of the holes in the new motherboard. If it does you're fine (you can get power from one of the old white molex connector things)

if it doesn't you need the cat 5
