Boswell
Im a bit bored today and im not really doing much so i thought i would do something constructive and create a trick guide for newbies to the sport.Get a trials bikeFirst things first you need to purchase a trials bike, I would recommend an Onza T-pro for 20" and an Onza T-rapter for 26". These are both excellent bikes for begginers. Basic skillsThis may sound stupid but you need to no how to ride a trials bike, the reasion being the gearing is a lot easier than on your average mountain bike/bmx. Just take your trials bike for a spin and get used to the gearing.TricksTrack standing The aim of this trick is to give yourself enough balance to stay on the bike and stay in the same position with comming off the bike. You achieve this by shifting your weight from side to side and slightly tapping the front wheel on the ground.Back hopping To perform this tick you have to be on the back wheel holding your back break on. throw your weight backwards whilst pulling up on the bars sharply, if you have done it right you should lift of the ground and move backwards as you land again regain your balance or do another one if need be.Booning This trick is very important as it helps to link other tricks. This is probably one of the simplist tricks to perform. When you are on the back wheel you have to force your weight up and down whilst leaning forward slightly this will result it you slowly hopping forwards. Pedal hoppingThis is a very important trials trick and the time taken to learn this trick varies greatly between people. Before you even start to learn this trick you are going to have to work out which foot you are going to have forward and which you are going to have back. Once you have figured this out you have to pull up on the handlebars sharply, let go of your break lever then sharply kick your front foot down on the pedal. The sequence i just explained should result in you lifting with the bike off the ground and travilling though the air slightly, as you are in the air turn your pedals back to there original position, pull the break lever again the land.Wheelie hoppingThis trick is harder and more complex than a pedal hop but once you have got the hang of it you will be able to perform it without thinking. To start the trick get a small amount of speed then get your feet in the opposite position to what you use to pedal hop with. Pull up sharply on the bars, lean back and kick your front foot down on the pedal so that the cranks spin round into your normal pedal hop position. If you practice enough this compination should send you quit a bit higher and further than a pedal hop. As you are moving though the air you do the same as you do in a pedal hop, pull the back break lever and land.I hope this trick guide has helped all you newbie trials riders out there. Smaug
Just have a few questions... Is a Trail bike a must? I mean people like Hans Rey used(and maybe still do) a GT MTB. Is this a sport for people on the heavy side? Im a pretty big dude, about 100Kg but not just all fat with a old GT Avalanche LE I have trashed around on for many years now(just love the bike for MTB'ing). Its not about the money. If a trail bike is a must I buy one, because I find it very difficult to balance my bike on the back wheel but is it just me, not figured it out or is it so much harder to learn to pedal hop on a old school MTB(I feel like like my bike is old school compared too many of the new ones with long travel forks and everything)? Will I be to heavy for any wheel set or frame useable to this sport? Boswell
You can do bike trials on a mountain bike but if your serious about doing trials i would get a specific bike. As for your weight worry, i don't think it really matters i have seen many heavier riders which seem not to be effected by there extra bulk.
