Sutty22
Okay. Yet another thread about a Hope Mono Trial thats not performing as it should. I got mine a few months ago and spent ages shimming it correctly. It bedded in ok and I was fairly happy with it. I've since started doing front wheel moves and its just not holding. I've searched on this endlessley and tried everything apart from facing the mounts. I've sanded the pads and brillo'd the rotor, I've rebled it, i've re-shimmed it and it's still crap.I ride stock and i'm about 90kg. i noticed in one of the threads that a few people had said that there is a massive difference between 160mm rotors and 180mm rotors and again to 200mm rotors and also 160 was too small for stock. I was convinced that mine was a 160mm but measured it and the inside diameter of the rotor is 160mm and the outside diameter is 180mm.Question one: What size disc do i have?Question two: Will facing my mounts and upgrading to a 200mm rotor make that much difference? It's going to cost a lot and I'm thinking about maybe going back to maggies. Any help would be gratefully receivedCheers, Sutty
matt rushton
Is it the 07 version. If it is I use myne on a stock and it is a 160mm with no problems at all. Try gettin your mounts faced. Thats all I can think of.Matt Rushton
Matthew_Gibson
Try re-bleeding it, I know you said you have, but make sure its air free. A bigger discwill make it better. I had a 185mm Avid on the front. and that was enough for me. Just re-bleed it. If that dont work. new pads maybe? I dont know about facing mounts, but I've heard it make a LOAD of difference. Muel
Your rotor will be 180mm, this is fine for a stock.Try bedding the pads in with mud, it works when I ride XC, go out for a muddy ride, your brakes are making nasty scraping moises but it beds you brake in in no time! just smear some round your rotor, ride up and down the road with the brake on and rinse it out really well with water. When bedding discs, apparently a really small amount of the material from your pads gets transferred onto your rotor, so you may have scrubbed this off.If all else fails, clean the rotor with pait thinners, its surprising how much black stuff comes out of a seemingly clean rotor, and buy new pads. They may be contaminated beyond use, I have heard that you can boil them in water to restore them but I would just get new ones, saves fussing. liam-pantera
sounds like the pads are contaminated to be honest you should go back to maggie because when a hope goes like that it cant be fixed .
Sutty22
Is it the 07 version.I think it's the 06 to be honest. It was one of the ones that 24/7 were selling on ebay that they had taken off the holroyds. They may be contaminated beyond use, I have heard that you can boil them in water to restore them but I would just get new ones, saves fussing.Anyone know about boiling them? I may try it and if I see an improvement then buy some new pads. Edited June 15, 2007 by Sutty22
Matthew_Gibson
Anyone know about boiling them? I may try it and if I see an improvement then buy some new pads.Works a treat! I boiled them, LOADS better. my pads had oil in and the made it a lot better, still didn't qure the problem.
ilikeriding
I have a similar sort of problem, mainly due to a bend in the disc i think, but if you lean forward enough it should hold.
Ash-Kennard
send the fanny back if its new.i would tell them to give me a working brake or a refund
Greetings
I ride stock and i'm about 90kg. i noticed in one of the threads that a few people had said that there is a massive difference between 160mm rotors and 180mm rotors and again to 200mm rotors and also 160 was too small for stock.Well, frankly speaking that brake is too weak for your needs. I've had a Mono Trial and it was a nice brake but just didn't have enough power so I switched over to a BB7. If you look through vids of all these 26" power riders like Neil or Pauly, you'll find that most of them run BB7's.Facing your mounts won't help much unless they're unusually uneven. You have a 180mm rotor.
Sutty22
send the fanny back if its new.i would tell them to give me a working brake or a refundUsually I would but I've had it for months now. I haven't ridden it all that much due to being out of the country but it's still been used and is a good few months old.I've boiled the pads. No difference. Think they might be well contaminated with oil perhaps. May get some new pads and get the brake mount faced at the same time. Hope it works well after all that otherwise i'll be going back to maggies or trying a BB7. Edited June 15, 2007 by Sutty22
