First post here... If I'm up at this time normally, then it's because I'm busy! Got to get up again in a couple of hours to take parents to the airport... Jon

Finally got round to looking at it. Have conclude that VW are complet idiots and will definatly not be getting the bill paid. I doubt there was anything wrong with the old catch - just needed adjusting. I fail to see how replacing the catch requires 2 hours of labour -I had it off and on and adjusted within 10 minutes. Have also conclude that the damper on the bonnet is dodgy and when it doesn't work properly, it bends the brackets it's attached to. Funnily enough, now that he catch works fine and I've bent the bracket back, it's been okay. They said the skin of the bonnet had shifted on the frame. Looks to me like they're welded together in a lot of places so if the skin had moved on the frame, all the welds would fail (can't see that happening) or the bonnet would be badly distorted in a frame shaped way and you'd see it from the outside, which you can't. Car looks perfect to the untrained eye now. Will never return to a stealership again. Jon

Will leave topic flagged for Tom/Danny to look at. Jon

Ta The main reason is our scrappy rarely has anything golf, and secondly I'd rather have nothing to do with her car as she's really shit at reporting problems - like she's didn't phone the garage or go back to it after she smelt the smoke. Jon

A little VW help here please guys: My girlfriend has a Mk4 (1998 R reg) Golf (1.6 manual) and the bonnet is fubared. It went for it's MOT ages ago and she drove from Liverpool to Derby to get the MOT done at a garage who've always been good in the past (arranged through a mate) After the MOT, she was driving down a dual carriage way and the bonnet flipped up - the MOT tester had obviously not felt the need to shut it. I passed a message onto my mate who was supposed to mention it to the garage - didn't think any harm had been done as bonnet still opened/shut OK. (Turns out he never bothered to mention it, and wont now as he doesn't want to damage his 'reputation' with them. A few months down the line and the bonnet jammed shut. She took it to VW who forced it open and decided the catch was at fault. It was booked for a week later when they were going to replace the catch. The bonnet then wouldn't shut beyond the first latch and wasn't sitting straight, but we just took it that VW knew what they were doing. It went in for the catch which they've fitted, and then phoned her and told her the bonnet still wouldn't shut and it would need to go to the body shop to be looked at. (seems to me like the catch was never at fault) A few days later and she's been back and left it with them, and now they reckon it needs a new bonnet and want to charge £700 - new bonnet, paint for bonnet and wings. To add to that, someone has been smoking in the car as it now smells of smoke! Are VW normally this crap at diagnosing/fixing problems? I also think they're taking the piss with wanting to paint the wings at the same time. Where can I find the paint code so I can look at getting a second hand bonnet that is already the right colour? Any suggestions as to where to get one? Jon (ta for reading the essay)

I heard that too. It gives me hope that the government can influence large companies like OPEC. Or was it the other way round?

Not in Essex, but I've used Argos - http://www.argoscycles.com/ for repair and paintwork on my Pashley many moons ago. The finish was pretty good. Depending on the colour you want, it might be worth looking at powder coating - should be around £45 and it's much tougher than paint. Jon

If there were perfect products out there, why would they ever need replacing? I suspect the companies are happy enough to produce the parts as they are. Given the nature of trials, I'd treat almost everything on my bike as a consumable. Jon

If I had a company that manufactured parts in China, I wouldn't send them to England to test them. It sounds to me like you don't understand how a business should work. Jon

Not sure if it's possible to flash the phone to accept SDHC. My phone (if you can call it that) - an XDA Orbit running Windows Mobile 6 can have the SD driver updated to make it work with SDHC. Jon
