Most people will say Avid bb7, but the best brake I ever had was a magura julie, it was powerful, held well, and had modulation. What more could you want from a front brake?

The internets your friend, unless you are blind with dildo's ductaped to your hands you can't really 'ruin' your headset, and even then it'd be quite a push to do any substantial damage to it.

You checked your headset for any damage? Have you ridden it loose? Like Inur said, it could be a flared headtube, you checked that?
