fan belt, when they are cold they're less grippy, there foreslip and make noise, when warm they get softer and grip either need a new fanbelt, or tension the fanbelt properly. maybe the belt has been contaminated with oil? hope this helps

was the freewheel new? if not then it'll probarbly be down to lack of good maintenance! those eno lockrings shouldnt really come loose as its a sealed bearing

i think global warming only really becomes and issue when the uk starts to get the kinds of climate expected at our latitude! i.e. freakin cold! my view is that everything that we create or do to help keep our effects on global warming to a minimum, deducts from the quality of life we lead, for example less powerful machinery, tighter building reg's, tighter business reg's... so the option for me is either : live life without worry (and cause my share of damage to the environment [which in my opinion is negligable]) or to live life with certain aspects of my life limited ( and cause less damage to the environment [which may be worth doing, but in the same case may not be worth doing. without proof, WHO KNOWS?])

doubt that's going to make any difference to be honest! if the lever isnt too tight then the only force going throuh the bars at that point is when you're braking. 2 years is good for a set of bars imo! check the stem clamp area, i bet there are cracks mine were cracked after a year..
