Sectioned courses are much easier to say who wins as they're measurable (timings), but I dont know if they're as fun because everyone will be aiming to win by going as fast as they can which tires people out. Also unless the courses are specifically designed, there's only going to be one route which will reduce originality which some riders today specialise in.
WHEREAS
A freestyle comp has no set way to win, and therefore can provide surprises and plenty of fun as you can't beat someone by doing their trick faster. At our freestyle comp, Tim Stedman won because he was trying insane moves and pulling them off (most of the time ;) ) Even though someone else did the hugest sidehop in the contest. Freestyle comps are a pain in the arse to determine winners though, as favortism can effect decisions even slightly...
Pro's and cons for both. All i can say is our freestyle competition was ACE! >_< (Y)
