The silent clutch hubs were quite interesting to ride, you could wind up the mechanism, then use it to get some extra surge in your pedal stroke. Downsides - crap bearings, mechanism prone to exploding, very heavy. A King ring drive hub is a sharper ride, and a lot lighter, but the Shimano silent clutch hubs could have been great.

1995, those were the good days!

People have come and gone in the past, new users pop up, old ones disappear into the ether. Older members will always remember fondly how good it used to be, while younger members won't realise just how unusual, difficult, and fragmented trials was before the Internet. I'm not sure if there's been a change in attitude, or if younger folk are more savvy when it comes to posting stuff on the Internet, but there's definatley a different style of posting these days. There's also far more focus when a group of people decide that something is important - like tucks. It's easy to say that we're lacking good discussion, we're not. The problem is the signal to noise ratio is so high that a lot of the good stuff gets lost in amongst the dross. I always believe that any forum lives and dies by the standards it holds. Standards are slipping, and the only reponse you get is "its a trials forum, not a spelling contest!!!" It's not about being perfect, it's about raising everyone to a standard which makes the forum a fun, productive place. Section7 used to be bemoaned by some folk as caring more about spelling and punctuation, but it hosted some really great discussions, and was vibrant while it lasted. It's not about quantity, it's about quality, and a lot of users would do well to keep that in mind, especially on a resource which costs them nothing...

Someone described a lot of TF as not a discussion, but a load of people all spouting opinions, and no one listening. There's only a few threads I actively look at these days, and a few members I look out for, other than that I just lurk and moderate. As for voting SMs in and out, people get the whole SM thing way out of proportion. The only reason SMs exist is to provide a group of people who can discuss forum matters, help keep things running smoothly and improving. The only people with power are mods and admins, which is a pretty thankless task.

This Is Why You Don't Wear Tight Pants Riding...

Ultimately girls jeans on a bloke is like cheap hotel. No ball room. -

Except that they're cut and designed for women? Speaking of which, where do you put your knackers in girls jeans? In your handbag? -

I realise I'm an old so and so, but what part of "I wear girls jeans because..." seems normal? Boys in girls jeans, 'mini' straighteners for men... Isn't there a word for men dressed in women's clothes? Do you boys worry about a VPL? I have yet to reach an age where I wear jeans with elastic in them, but when I do they'll match my memory foam slippers a treat. "Excuse me, do you have these in a 12? What? No they're for me... Yes really." -
Dave Hemming was a rep for a while with ATB Sales (Doing Marin and Whyte), but was last seen riding with a friend of mine in the US! God knows what he's doing these days... Paul Hudson was a top trick rider, but a lot of old school BMX flatlandy type tricks. I always wondered how many he could actually hold. Was watching Chainspotting last night on DVD, and it's funny now just how small some of the riding is, especially in these days of the Red Bull Rampage and such. The quality and style of productrion though is still right up there. It'd be worth some of the current video makers to have a watch and try and learn...

Basically, yeah. Selfridges is MASSIVELY expensive! A box of Lucky Charms cereal (Maybe $1.50 in the US) is £7.50 a box. However, the range is pretty special.

If memory serves. Fletcher was last seen studying Theology in London... Insanely talented guy, but very much a tricks rider rather than trials. Not convinced that Jez was in Dirt... Sure you're not thinking of Scott Dommet on something purple?

Really impressed Jonny, I've been following these episodes as they've popped up on Facebook - looked like a really fun trip! Bet you'd glad to get all the editing out the way

I've still got Revolution, a signed copy of Evolve from when they were being sold at Bike 2001 and Reed came over to film, and I've just dug Contact out to watch again. Shame they haven't had a proper DVD transfer, a lot of video bods on here would learn a lot watching them...

Was never released on DVD, and even Chilli have really cut down their selection of trials DVDs these days. eBay would be your best bet. You could buy a video player while you're there...

I think you've shown your colours there Sir. It worries me when people - especially young people - find Chubby Brown/Jim Davidson/Bernard Manning funny. The misdirection is that frog, itai and paki are all derogatory terms invented by British people. Somehow a punchline of "If you're from France your French, if you're from Italy you're Italian and if you're from Pakistan you're Pakistani" wouldn't have quite had the same impact with his... audience.

Trust what? You seem to have stopped mid-sentence... Topics get closed or deleted for a number of reasons, mostly because either everything has been said which needs to be, or it's gotten personal and is no longer on topic. It's not sweeping it under the table or trying to protect advertisers. All mods will try and keep threads open as long as they're being useful. We don't often delete threads, and when we do, there's a damn good reason. We also do talk amongst each other, so if one person does something that enough other mods disagree with, it gets reversed. Rich is well aware of his position - both as mod and his association with Trials-UK. He has way too much integrity to get involved where people could get the impression you have Simps. One and the same thing. You could file a police report, but I'm not sure the competition commission would be interested, as they deal with matters of big companies using their size and/or influence on the market place to unfairly restrict competitors. Trading Standards would probably be a good place to start. For the cost of a letter from a solictor, get a refund and threaten a court claim against him. Simple.

You can find the list here.

Static IPs are only really needed if you want to host a server of some sort. These days with always-on broadband, your IP address will change once in a blue moon. Static IPs are also less than ideal if you want to chop and change your IP on a regular basis!

That doesn't looked photoshopped to me to be honest...

Edited for Ghost Busters. Odd. IMDB says that it's 'Ghost Busters' while Wikipedia has it as simply 'Ghostbusters'.

You can't choose any IP address for your PC to appear on the Internet as. If you picked an address that wasn't yours, all the return traffic from the website would go to that address and and never reach you. As someone's pointed out, ISPs get assigned blocks of IP addresses, which are then usually broken down by geographic region to aid routing, and then your broadband box gets assigned an address by a DHCP server. If you try and pick up a new IP address - either by switching your broadband box off for a couple of days, or forcing a re-request somehow - yours will either change by a handful of digits on the final octet only, or you'll get the same one again because the lease for your broadband box's MAC address hasn't expired. Can you guess what I do for a living? If you want to make your IP appear substantially different, it's a proxy. Edit: Tom is basically right. You can run any IP address you like internally, it's just that 10.0.0.0/8 and 192.168.0.0/16 are protected by RFC1918 as not replicated on the Internet. If you were to use an address internally that is on the Internet, you wouldn't have a problem unless you ended up trying to access a website (or service) hosted on that IP or subnet, and your router would think it was hosted locally and you'd be screwed.

Good luck to the whole family! You'll be missed for sure. You both came a long way...

I think I'm still an admin for that group too!

It's also worth making a distinction between photographs used in (for example) news where it's expected to be an accurate depiction of real life, compared to editorial/adverting use.

Nah, just some old school reminiscing... Who remembers the MTB-Trials mailing list? Or the photocopied Essex club newsletters?
