Yeah that twin chain setup wasn't ideal... We have space in the team for round 1, near Leicester, 29th March. You know how to get in touch if you wanna help us do some pedalling And what better way to start figuring out how to build one...
-
Ha! I think the bit of wheel out of shot /cropped off would have looked like a banana! Yeah I sold it in the end, was a top frame.
-
Yeah, an 07 Czar which I chopped about 300g off, then had anodised. Wheelbase was about 995, it's definitely the lens!
-
That is old! I loved that bike. And I appear to have consumed all the pastries.

I'm absolutely not judging Especially since I built a rig to test rolling resistance of a few different sets of tyres The ones that came out best by miles (if the numbers are to be believed, around a 30w saving from a set of 4!) are 40mm wide, hence probably not worth us using wheel discs... Figured the most we'll be pumping out over longer runs will be ~180w, which is about 18mph, so not a huge speed - our mechanical losses are about balanced with aero losses at the moment. This is a cool little tool you may or may not have seen: https://www.gribble.org/cycling/power_v_speed.html This is approximately where we ran the car last time: https://www.gribble.org/cycling/power_v_speed.html?units=imperial&rp_wr=167.551&rp_wb=70.548&rp_a=7&rp_cd=0.4&rp_dtl=10&ep_crr=0.00972&ep_rho=0.076537&ep_g=0&ep_headwind=0&p2v=200&v2p=22 And now with revised drivetrain setup and new tyres, should be more like this: https://www.gribble.org/cycling/power_v_speed.html?units=imperial&rp_wr=167.551&rp_wb=70.548&rp_a=7&rp_cd=0.4&rp_dtl=5&ep_crr=0.006&ep_rho=0.076537&ep_g=0&ep_headwind=0&p2v=200&v2p=22 As you can see, I'm still in the stages of 'optimising' the big lumps of power loss, but yes, I totally agree that small gains will have a huge effect over the lengths of the races. If you fancy a bash Rowan you'd be welcome, btw!

That's the one! Yeah I looked into the wheel disc thing... apparently you can make a mess of you do it wrong and it doesn't have much effect over a certain speed. We have other more important stuff to improve for now, ha. The helmet thing could be a good one aye, or something behind the drivers head - quite a lot of teams do this...
-
Doesn't look rough to me! Nice little project that Cheers! So far we're entered for Bruntingthorpe end of this month and one near Sheffield start of May. I really fancy the 24hr but nobody else will commit yet... ha

Which caliper # are you using (usually 3 or 5, engraved into the caliper)? Any adaptors? What the distance from hub axle to lower bolt hole on disc mount (C to C)? If unsure, photos would help.

Welcome! Sore hands is pretty normal until you get used to it again, but your rear brake with standard pads on an untreated rim will be hard work. Some Tr1al pads would be a good shout. Rear brake: bleeding is not a standard maintenance procedure for HS33 brakes. You only need to do it if there is air in the system. To test, turn the red TPA wheel all the way to minus and pull the lever slowly. If the pads start to move straight away then you're good. If the lever moves a bit before the pads move, there is air in the system. Front brake: That cable disc Onza fitted is actually very powerful, providing it isn't contaminated, which it looks like it might be from the photos (the rotor should be silver and shiny, looks a bit brown?). Wipe the rotor with a piece of clean toilet tissue and see if anything comes off. If it's contaminated, it will be cheaper and easier to get a new brake. Cheap hydro brakes are a bit crap, if you're on a budget a BB5 works very well and you can use the existing lever and cable.

Oh, yeah, 29ers feel awful for anything other than sending it straight down a big hill, unless you are a giant.

Don't get hung up on wheel size, there is a small difference but its mostly marketing bollocks. The big difference comes in geometry - longer, slacker frames came about around the same time as bigger wheels. I built myself a frame for 26" wheels that has 'modern' geometry and it rides just great. I run a 26" wheel in some 27.5" forks, works fine. You can adapt axles fairly easily in moat cases. Just build something and get shredding
-
Ha, thanks Dave, though you might not say that if you tried to ride it! Yeah we are Pedalling Tarts, have a few others lined up so got a full team for round 2, but perhaps have to do the odd one as a duo or solo.
-
We do need to make that happen...
-
Someone on the Facebook group said the best way to train for pedal car racing was to ride a recumbent bike... so I built one, using parts from an old slick-shod MTB I used for commuting! Too much of a pussy to cut the steerer tube down yet!
-
Ha yep. Insanely fast, in a straight line anyway, something like 30mph average I think? We're nowhere near that at the moment, averaging about 18.5mph over a lap. Hoping better weather conditions might improve that though, it was very windy yesterday! Handling is great though, really neutral and easy to drive, yet still pulled 1.1g on full slicks even in those wet conditions. I think we'll be more suited to the twisty tracks...!
-
Well, it works, and it drifts like every RWD car should Weighs almost bang on 30kg like this. Engine needs a lot of work if we're going to trouble the top boys!
-
Bloody is! Love the little wedges, awesome.
-
Ace, and looking great - roll cage will be a piece of piss after that manifold! Luke - Lobster has been languishing recently, been playing around with other stuff. Keen to get it out on track soon though. What have you been up to car-wise?
-
Yeah I have, seemed decent guys. No frills, pretty good prices. I've used Parquip a lot in the past, they were the cheapest I could find by miles, it is very 'agricultural' stuff though.
-
Makes sense now you think about it! I can certainly see how hills are an issue with additional weight...
-
There's a hill at Curby? Guess you don't feel it in a car! Thanks for that, need to check weight but hoping to be near that 26kg...
