Hmm... so... purely for sidehopping, zoo python or monty 221? Both have near enough same chainstay length, but the monty has a much much shorter front end!
-
Hi, I just wondered what kind of geometry makes a mod easier to do big sidehops than on another mod? Like shorter reach bikes with longer chainstays tend to be easier to manual, longer reach bikes with shorter chainstays tend to be easier on the back wheel, etc. Does BB rise make much difference on a mod? Also what about stem length, etc? Cheers, Scott

I think you are probably right there tom. People with wider rims have the oppertunity to use lower pressures without risk of foldage, so thats why they may get more pinches. Saying stuff like "it requires more/less force to push the tyre to the rim" is stupid, because although it may do when compared to another rim with the tyre at a certain pressure, it also would effect the bounciness of the tyre in exactly the same way! So to give a similar feel of bounciness on one rim to another, you may run higher/lower pressures, but the pinch-ability of that setup will be exactly the same as the other when they are just as bouncy, if you get what I mean.. Its really hard to explain, but I hope this makes sense.

http://www.trials-forum.co.uk/forum/index....=48393&hl=giant Thats my giant up for sale. Great spec, I just need the money as I have got into mod trials and want a car!
-
Thanks, so where can you get these things? Does it still keep a good lock when u need it for big stuff, no chance of brake slip, etc? Cheers

I totally agree that THIS type of riding is true street, I hate it when people go "I ride street" and that actually mean basically exactly the same as riding natural or comp style, but on an urban environment. To me street means bunnyhops, manuals, spins, etc. I ride street, and I came from my giant trials team to my current t-pro (soon aquiring bongo's older 221 frame hopefully!). I ride it with my bmxy m8 sometimes, and do the same kinda lines as him, big manuals into hops etc. I actually think mods are the best at riding street yet maintaining the trialsy feel to them! I find riding a properly streety-geometry stock (e.g. 390-400mm stays) doesnt have that "trialsy feel", whereas a mod which manuals just as well would feel sooo much more trialsy! Like my t-pro, with miniscule 362mm stays, which actually doesnt manual that badly considering.

Wow, that stuff sounds interesting. Anyone else use it? I'm mainly interested because I do streety-type mod trials, on SMOOTH rims (i hate grinds lol). So I want modulation for manuals, etc, but I still like to do a lot of power moves so need really good biting brakes. At the moment I use tar with crap pads, it bites insanely, but has no modulation at all. So what setup would you reccomend me using on a smooth rim for modulation AND very good lock? Would you reccomend me using that spray stuff? with what pads? And how much does it cost? Cheers

When I ran 9 speed I used a connex wipperman, after getting through 3 SRAM chains and two KMC kool narrow chains within half a year. Its still on my bike in the garage, its the blue teflon coated one- I would highly reccomend them, and I got it on offer for £26 from chain reaction :- Hope this helps

Has anyone else had any experience with the road hub thing?
-
Does anyone use the £22ish non-disk one that is on Tartybikes with skewer? It is described as being designed for roadies only, but can be used for trials "if you want to take the risk" or something. If so, how are they running? They seem ridiculously light and cheap, might get one for my mod
-
Nah, they seem a bit expensive for my budget at £53 or however much they are. I have onza carbon flats atm, which are very very stiff, but mine seem a bit overweight at 380g or so (100g more than they claim), and i prefer the feel of risers I think. Are the onza carbon risers the actual claimed weight? And are they worth £53 when the zoo bars are £37/38?
-
Are the montys bars really worth the extra money over Zoo bars? Whats are zoo bars like? Do they feel "cheaper" or are they flexier/heavier?
-
Its time for me to go and buy a new bar and stem, but I don't want to get the monty stem and riser bars (mainly because of the sloping headcap, as I want to use my Xlite stem plug). Would the zoo riser bar and stem be good? Ive heard that really wide bars like this would feel weird on such a short bike (i will be running them on a monty 221), but is this true? Would it suit the monty well enough, and whats weight like?
-
I saw him riding that in a Coust vid aaaaages ago, seems weird if its a 2005 proto because it was quite a long time ago.

I kinda like the manliness of those humungously oversized forks compared to the spindly steel frame actually. I think its kinda cool, though I can undertsnad what other people say too. How do they ride?
-
What forks are they? They remind me of the shape of my old giants, but are those 4 bolt mounts?
-
I need to make the choice between high or low, long or short reach stems/bars soon.. How muchdid you find your lower bars improved you for gapping, etc over your T-master stem? Those are my two main stem choices I have to choose between
-
That is sweet as.... (Y) Not too keen on the forks though, and especially the stem
-
hmmmm.... 1 1/2 months :( optimistic
-
Mods are fun, get the team! I find they feel more trialsy, plus the lack of deraillier in particular (that could catch on things when sidehopping and bailing) helps inspire confidence.
-
Cool, lovin' the oldskool look of those beasts :( So basically, r they both crap?
-
I always used to see plazmatics a lot on mods, but havent seen them much anymore... What are they and the megamo's like?
-
Yeah, true. Have any recent viz forks ever broke? I personally havent heard of any
-
You can have my Xen if you want? I won it in MBUK but sadly dont use it (its the wrong size). Its the goldy/bronze one with Rocloc 4... anyone who wants it wanna make any offers?
-
I paid £97 for my viz forks including postage, but these Im guessing are the low ones? They seem very low to me. Oh well, Ill just have to keep riding with them and see how they cope, they feel nice so far. I kinda see what you mean about the weight, althogh it's not too heavy. mine weigh around 950g, more than i was expecting for mod forks, but then having said that t-pro forks weigh closer to 1400g!
