I've just been playing my copy of Mercenaries for the PS2 that arrived in the mail yesterday, and after playing it for a few hours I can safely say it's one of the most boring games I've ever played.
The environments lack detail, the roads are less than inspiring, the way the vehicles drive is appauling, the map is mostly empty, the pace is sluggish and killing a few people gets boring after a few minutes.
I think the game was meant to become a bigger, better and more detailed clone of the GTA series, and it has done everything but. I mean yeah, sure, having the ability to complete a mission any way you please in Mercenaries is a bonus and very well thought out, but it's the same over and over again. I've played the game for around 3/4 hours since I got it and sometimes I wish I hadn't bothered leaning forward to press the power button on my PS2 because the hassle of turning it off outweighs the 'fun' I get from playing the game.
One of the worst things about this game which bugged me was the steering of vehicles, and their controls. It actually feels like a chore to get in a vehicle and drive it in this game. It's so sluggish and boring that you'd rather get out and run for an hour than drive a skateboard with square wheels.
On the whole, I'm very disappointed with it. A certain waste of money and time.
What do you guys think?
