Thats actually quite a good point. Even though the fuji is a fantastic camera, and in some situations auto can be fine, for snapshots etc but for anything else it's crap. Maybe use shutter or apature pirority but auto for trials is poo. Just use friggin Manual, it's not even hard to use so whats all the fuss about, change a few settings here and there and its piss. It's like trying to teach a monkey, only he'd probably have more luck.

1) make sure the lights on 2) Lower apature (2.8) 3) Higher iso (400) If all else fails 4) Flash Bloody simple O yeh, the bloody essay I wrote yesterday will tell you for gods sakes

You've had your camera for how long and you don't think you can change the shutter speed Dave forking come on lad, smack it on M for manual and use the buttons to change the shutter speed. For trials, about 1/250th is ideal. Never use "sports mode" = crap On your camera when you look on the lcd or viewfinder there will be a little line..... like this - ---------- + Thats your light metre, you need to work out the shutter, iso and apature to balance it in the middle so that pics come out exposed right. It's just a matter of experimenting and getting it right, also use fill flash, looks good in the day too. On your average gray day you may need something like iso 200, F 5.6 , 1/320 for trials. Can't really say, each scenario is different depending on the light available, just play with the settings to get that little light metre balaced. The disadvantage of having a slower shutter speed means blurry riders, James's face on that front wheel gap for instance. Pop the flash up and that'll help loads! For trials you don't want to go anything under 1/125 really, with flash. Handheld snapshots you can get away with about 1/60th without any blur, depends how steady your hands are really. As my photography teacher said the other day " If your using auto mode on the camera, I wouldn't even call you a photographer" Thats how you'll get better mate, use M. You said that you just took a pic and it was all dark. Well inside it's probably not great, and pretty hard to get the right light without using some sort of flash. Anyway i'll shut up now Some nice pics and the riding....well I won't go there Rob -
Haven't really read many replies but yeh, 2.8 is what you need in low light but also gives max depth depth of field, making the robin stand out. Iso, the higher the more noise, I know from my fuji that the S series seem to be very noisey. On mine it didn't go over 400 so 800 is pushing it a bit really image quality wise. The higher the iso, the more pixles it makes up and obviously it gets it wrong and this makes noise ( i think) Anyway had a little play....... Original Mine... Just some subtle changes: Levels, lifted the midtones and highlights. Hue/sat (+14) brought out the colours more Curves then used the burn tool on 2% on the twigs etc to make the robin stand out more unsharp mask of 100 Crop Looks much better

As new to photography or photoshop as he may be i'd advise strongly about putting those in a portfolio. I wouldn't even start to build a pf until you know what your doing with the camera, photoshop etc etc etc. Seems like he's experimenting which is cool but I wouldn't build a pf just yet.

lol sure Bacially you have the insurance so that say your mum/dad is the MAIN driver, and because they have lots of no claims (hopefully) and there old and careful (hopefully) then the insurance will generally be alot cheaper, then you are just a named driver. It costs a little more than if your parents were to insure it alone but it's certinatley much cheaper than having you insure it for say £900 on your own
