Hah, thanks anyway, King

I would probably be worried less if I were staying in the faculty but I want to move from the medical and veterinary faculty (neuroscience) to the arts faculty (philosophy/theology joint honours). And additionally, there's only 2 places available on that course to begin with. So far I've sent an e-mail to the admissions tutor asking if they could afford a place for me but I've yet to hear anything back. I've also let me personal tutor know but everybody at this uni seems to take ages to respond to communications so as of yet I have no idea what chance I have of changing. But it's a good point that they want me for the money I bring. Things seem quite serious here so I'd kinda just assumed they'd easily get rid of me Thanks for your input

Basically, I've made somewhat of a mistake in my choice of uni subjects. I've begun the process of trying to change courses but given the rate of applicants to places (138 to 2) and (380 to 20), I suspect that there won't be room for me on the course I would really like to study. I'm more than a bit stressed about this due to the fact I may have to leave uni, wait another year, reapply though ucas again, lose money, etc. I guess what I'd like is to hear about is anybody elses experience to do with this? I've read info on the net but I've not found much in the way of personal accounts. So anything anybody has to say would be appreciated to help me understand my options, likelihoods, etc. although obviously I understand every situation is different. Thanks in advance.

Still lovin' it Is it claimed that the earth is only 7000 years old by some people then?
-
That's a bit unlucky then. Feel free to pm with questions if you get stuck some more/need advice using premiere in general
-
What version of premiere are you using? I've found CS3 to be the most stable. The others can be fairly awful in terms of stability. I even found CS4 to be more unstable than CS3. Premiere is a bit of an arse at first but a lot it is deductable from just playing around. The help section is pretty good as well.
-
Yeah, that is a bit silly!
-
Surely if you've captured using adobe the file will, by default, be sitting in the project box? Or do you mean that it won't play in the source monitor? Sometimes premiere doesn't properly render the files when you first import them. I mostly get this issue only with audio files however. Are you definitely selecting the correct video properties for your project?

Hah. It's the second week The trouble is, I overtrained the other day and made myself ill, so I missed two lectures and study that shoud have been done on Tuesday and Wednesday. I've also been handed about 6inches worth of handbooks to read. I shall get my shit together and definitely be out for sunday though, if you or anyone else is game? Really want to hit that flatbank again

I don't think JT thinks evolution a means in itself but rather the theory is used, beyond what it is per se, as a means against Creationism, which I also think is true. If we are being literal about Christianity, then there's certainly a logic to doing so. It's a good argument.

I can't make it now. This university lark seems to require more time than I was expecting. I have to spend the rest of the day studying
-
Weather permitting and providing that I don't have too much studying to do, I reckon I should be up for this

I don't really see your point because you've clearly not taken the time to understand what I've said. I have offered a view, one open to experience and not just reason or faith, about what God means. This is not philosophical but it does, however, render the normal arguments for and against God as fairly meaningless. Consequently, I have also stated that I do not think it likely that a God, as an entity, exists. Unfortunately for your either/or desires, I have to reference any point of view to another point of view which considers the human limitation of knowledge. My experience informs me that I get it wrong quite frequently. History shows that the common sense/view of a great deal of people at a given time is frequently found to be incorrect. The first individual who suggested the existence of micro-organisms and their potential harm to our health was kicked out of the medical profession for saying such ridiculous things. Something may make a lot of sense to us, but we can only grasp a small amount of the picture at any one time with our ideas. Thinking this, I find myself unable to say to 100% that God, as an entity, does not exist. Although I will live my life as though he does not, due to 99.99% chance that I believe him not to. I also find this a good way of practicing against dogma regarding any area of life, not just religion and especially for science. Another point I've been trying to put forward is the idea that philosophy is not some separate practice that only practitioning philosophers engage in. Every individual possesses assumptions and reasoning that is not open to scientific examination. These are always incomplete, again, because of how limited we are. These underlying and often unconcious philosophies are carried into science. Science is immersed in phiosophy! It directs our practice of science! Understanding this gives us the freedom to adjust and discard philosophies which are no longer useful in whatever we are doing. This is what I mean of science as a type of myth or religion. It is considered a kind of all powerful, all knowing activity that doesn't have philosophical assumptions. Again, I'm trying to promote a modesty in our practices and potential knowledge but also trying to indicate the validity of philosophy. I will admit, relating to what I've just said that philosophy is very open to confusion and nonsense. But again, this has definite consequences for science. You don't seem to want to understand what I say yet you are very willing to point out how incorrect I am?

Furry muff and thanks for your honesty. Definitely undesirable things motivate me in life, although I'm always trying to change that. I am, however, very passionate about these topics and any excuse to talk about them is almost always taken up. My 'passion' isn't helped by the fact that I rarely get to discuss these things, despite spending a lot of time thinking about them - it's somewhat of a pressure release and often goes unchecked. I guess I do feel quite confident in my views but, at least in theory, I accept that I could ultimately be talking nonsense. I hope you recognise that at least I try against negative motivations. I've been trying to call for a type of modesty against the view that religion is all nonsense, so does this not show a recognition of our limitations, myself included?. Perhaps I need to take my own advice? I'll try and reflect on that although I quite dislike the idea that I've been arrogant I like everyone of the forum. Sitting here I don't think or feel myself above people. Arrogance does frustrate me, but again, maybe I need to consider if I'm also engaged in this? Passion, arrogance or a bit of both?

Looking for an excuse to kill some people JD? I'm sorry but my conception of God does not relate to war. It is more about having an awareness, separate to ideas, of the nature of our existence. This type of awareness relates to love and as such is anti-war.
-
What's the point in saying that? No doubt, like everybody else in this world, I get it wrong in places but if you were to actually take the time to try and understand my comments you would find that they are relavent and are not a ramble. A lot (but not all) of the ideas I put forward are my understanding (and probably misunderstanding) of ideas that come from religion and the philosophy of science. Admittedly they are not typical to a forum discussion but they are typical to the more detailed discussion that occurs elsewhere. I don't see anything wrong with the introduction of less commonly held ideas? I think the introduction of a realisable type of God (not as an entity) has massively helpful implications to us all. Same with the potential understanding of the limits of science and faith that often comes with it that can be so similar to that of religion. I was making a hypothetical joke. I'm not sure why you feel the need to put me down?

I've got a dictaphone for uni. Depending on a lecture material, I have listened to it again when making the 45 min walk to uni (which is the same time as the bulk of my lectures). However, I'm also storing each lecture in an organised fashion so I can come back to it at some point in the future if it helps to do so. I can see how it might not be for everyone but I think it useful for some of us.

I reckon your nerves would break and you'd vibrate for the rest of your life. Then after you die, God would probably make you vibrate for eternity for not believing in him. Proof is in the cross shaped pudding and the jesus face crisp.

I'd love to see the look on all your faces if God turns out to exist

Glued hand. I doubt you have much longer to live People up for a ride either tomorrow or thursday?

I think we were told that tampering with a fire alarm is illegal and carries with it some undesirable consequences. I'm guessing your halls isn't like mine. We have 24hr on duty tutors and security and these people would clamp down on such behaviour. If not, then I would actually consider approaching your university whom I'm sure would not look too kindly on the setting off of fire alarms. Aside from the stress it's causing you, it's also clearly dangerous in the sense of "crying wolf". Next time you could easily assume it's a prank when it's actually a reality. I'd even consider threatening this chap with approaching the university. I really do suspect falsely setting off fire alarms would carry with it some harsh penalties.
