    Problems

Thats what i have on my 9700 pro, works a treat, nice and quiet, but cools really well. I'd say it sounds like a virus, rather than a graphics card problem.
  2. Well i seem to be going backwards not getting better, i think ill have to get quite a lot of natty done over the summer, practice sections rather than just big moves, now all i need to do is find some natural somewhere near home, unlikely :- Dave, don't moan too much, i still can't see any form of results due to the poor ntl dns servers
  3. it certainly is, i seem to be addicted to buying computer graphics cards  3 in the past month!!!!
  4. We are all old gits, back in our day A-levels were harder mumble mumble mumble. To get on the masters i needed to get BBB, missed that so ended up on the bachelors but moved up after the first year as i got reasonable marks. I think the entry requirements for the bachelors was BCC. Random fact of the day. Loughborough was the only uni out of the 6 i applied for that didn't have any places for mech eng in clearing, even notts (highest grades required) who wanted ABB had places and would have taken me with BBC, just shows how popluar loughborough is. I think there is something about the atmosphere here that i managed to pick up on my visits, it seems nice and chilled out and not up its own arse like notts and southampton were.
  5. I like the look and styling of Macs, but don't want to have to re-learn how to do everything on them. I also like playing with the hardware i have to get it running as fast as possible. In terms of windows itself, i haven't really got any problems with it. I haven't had a Blue screen on any of my 3 PC's running XP Pro in over a year!!!! I think this may be due to having windows installed on a seperate partition from most other things, and just being generally careful with what i install. I also have pretty tried and tested hardware that seems to work very well together, which always helps.
  6. I got BBBC and am doing a master in mechanical engineering the same as Steve. Hopefully i wont need any lifts if i manage to get a car, but im not sure yet.
  7. you format every week then :) if you defrag every week it shouldnt take long and will keep your computer running at its best.
  8. First dibs on lifts with chris, yes get in there :)
  9. whys that ^_^ you know you want my processor ;)
  10. Forget what GHz they are working at, those speeds are only useful for comparing between processors in the same range. If you game, an amd IS better than the same priced intel, and will still be better when the new games come along, no matter what spec they say it needs. At the moment the top fo the line amd FX55 runs at 2.6GHz or so, yet it beats the fants of pretty much all the intel offerings. This is (as has already been said in here) AMD processors perform more operations per clock cycle, i don't know what the comparison is, but for the same processor speed the amd will be MUCH faster than an intel. The equivilant AMD to the intel 3.2GHz would be something like an athlon XP 3200+, or an athlon 64 3200.
  11. Poop pics attached, its not quite finished yet, in terms of some more filling needs to be done. Results are not to bad visually, but get a 3-4 degree drop in case temps and 2-3 drop in cpu temps. Its still a shit case to begin with so im only polishing a turn until i can be bethered to make a case in the summer. The main modding on this is the fact its overclocked to feck. CPU: AMD athlon XP 2600+ (stock speed 1917MHz) running at 2420MHz on 1.85 volts cooled by thermalright SI-97 with 92mm panaflo fan RAM: OCZ premier running 2.5-3-3-7 timings at 210MHz Mobo: Abit NF7-S Gfx: ATI Radeon 9700 PRO on 360/330MHz with arctic cooling silencer HD: Maxtor 80 gig 8Mb cache 7200rpm PSU: Thermaltake butterfly 480Watt (sustained) DVD: 8xLG DVD+-R/RW/RAM fan controller: coolermaster aerogate cooling: 2x120mm roof exhaust, 2x80mm rear exhaust, 1x side intake
  12. Awesome, look forward to seeing you guys up here then. You'll love it.
  13. I'd definately say go for a P4 with hyperthreading (HT) as it effectively splits the processor in two. Increasing numbers of programs are being written for multiple cored or hyperthreading CPU's and those that arent, max out one of the virtual cores allowing you to still do other things with the remaining virtual core, this is handy if you are doing heavy rendering but still want to be able to use your PC, say for photoshop. Ideally you would want to go for an opteron or xeon workstation processor but they would more than likely be out of your budget, or compramise you system due to having to downfrade other componants. In terms of RAM, i would go for the lowest CL rating you can get, whilst this isnt as critical to system performance as with AMD based systems it shows a good quality stick of RAM. 2 x 1Gb sticks of CL2, or CL2.5 RAM would be good for normal DDR, CL3 would be good for DDR2. Unfortunately i don't know much about P4 systems so my advice is pretty limited. Give the bit-tech.net forum a look, as there are lots of very knowlegeable people on there. For hard drives the important thing to consider is the amount of cache, and the speed (rpm). A western digital raptor spinning at 10,000 rpm would be good for your programs and operating system whilst a 7200 rpm sata hard drive with a large amount (8Mb+) cache is what you would want to be looking for in terms of storage. Check out the P4 bundles on www.overclockers.co.uk as they represent good value and usually a nicely balanced system. For graphics, i don't have a clue what would be best for use with maya, probably a workstation nVidia Quadra series or matrox card.
  14. I think the full project log for that is on in the forum on bit-tech.net.
  15. there are a few options to make your computer quieter. 1. Buy a fan controller into which the fans will plug. I have 4 of my fans controller using an coolermaster aerogate. 2. Buy quieter fans. I recommend panaflo fans found at http://www.dorothybradbury.co.uk/, they are quiet and remain quiet throughout their life. If you dont want to get those then you should be looking for fans that have a noise level of less than 25dB if possible. 3. Undervolt the fans you already have (case fans only). The easiest method of doing this is to swap a couple of the pins around in a 4 pin molex to fan converter to make the black ground wire sit in the place of the red 5V wire. This will make the fans run off 7V and be a lot quieter, however they wont move as much air as a result. Also you MUST NOT connect anythin other than fans to the other end of the connector else you WILL kill whatever it is (cd drive, HD etc) Ill post a couple of pics of my PC up once i have the 2 120mm fans installed in the roof.
  16. I use smartripper to get the Vob and ifo files onto my hard drive then DVDx to convert them to the desired format. Dependant on the length of the film, the required output file size and your computer, it can take between 2 and 10 hours using the divx codec on slowest setting.
  17. not bad going for a budget trials frame. What are you going to get next?
  18. On a price to price comparison, nion ALL AMD chips are better and/or cheaper than the equivilant Intel. Intel de well due to most average joe's wanting "intel inside". Also the Intel P4 range is massively too hot needing pretty beasty cooling to run at lowish temps. The dothan processor cores found in the laptops with centrino processors has to be the way for intel to go as they are a much better design and run a hell of a lot cooler. AMD on the other hand have nice cool running chips, the AXP and A64's use a lot less voltage and resulting in cooler temps.
  19. it kinda works in spits and spats, you just have to be really persistant and patient.
  20. I'd definately go down the A64 route if you intesnd to game, they consistently beat higher priced intels in gaming tests. The specs of processors listed previously in this thread arent correct as there are several different core versions at each speed (core revisions effectlively mean differeing amounts of cache, different manufacturing scales and differeing built in instruction sets, read SSE, SSE2 etc) and therefore perform slightly differently. If you do not plan to overclock the PC at all (which by the sounds of it you dont as you havent got the confidence to build it up yourself) then the core type shouldnt worry you too much, unless you plan on having more than 2 gigs of RAM (which i doubt). In terms of spec i would recommend: A64 3500+ (venice core of possible) Make sure its a socket 939 processor as the older socket 754 is being phased out. 1Gb RAM PC3200 or higher (2x512Mb so they run in dual channel giving better memory bandwidth)(try and get something other than generic or value RAM) 6600GT or better (i am a fan of ATI cards, but for value for money the 6600GT beats everything around its pricepoint hands down) At least a 120gig hard drive, the make isnt too critical, although samsung spinpoints are probably the quietist around. The main factors with a HD are the cache and the speed. 7200rpm is the standard these days, and you should be looking for 8Mb cache to get good performance. I would also go for a SATA rather than an IDE drive as they have faster transfer rates. DVD writer, no reason not to get one as they are pretty cheap now. Dual layer is worth a look as you can get up to 9.6Gb on a dual layer disc. Finally dont skimp on a cheap power supply as they have the tendancy to blow up taking all the rest of your pc with them. You should be looking for a 350 watt or more to power that, which should cost upwards of £40. something like this from redjag would be plenty good enough. Price £975 I would price a system up on ebuyer but it is uber slow due to me being on ntl in the notts/leicester area :( That system should be future proof for games for a good couple of years. When you find something post a link just to double check before you buy (theres nothing worse than buying something only to fin you could have got something better for cheaper elsewhere, or that you have a massive bottleneck causing i to run slow and need upgrading. If you want any more advice give me a shout over msn (andrewhill101@hotmail.com) My current system is: AMD athlon XP 2600+ @ 2.4Ghz cooled by a thermalright SI-97 with 92mm panaflo Abit NF7-S motherboard 2x512Mb OCZ premier RAM @ 2.5-3-3-7 timings Radeon 9700 PRO with arctic cooling silencer 80Gb Maxtor plus 9 7200rpm HD with 8Mb cache LG 8x DVD+-R/RW/RAM Termaltake butterfly 480Watt power supply
  21. Monty probably used 6 gears as standard on their bikes, therefore the rule is 6? Thats my guess anyway. I think its a bit of a silly rule too, although only have one working gear on the stock i ride in the YMSA series. It was something that put me off riding comps for a bit, but now its clear that at club level it doesnt really matter i dont think it will be as much of a factor.
  22. i did this about a year ago now, and mine is still working fine. I filled the lever blade and the gold bushes so it all fits in the mag body. In terms of the lever not pulling to the bar, a small amount of choice filling should allow it to get pretty close without any problems.
  23. ill be there. should be a laugh, I wont be any good as my left arm is pretty weak after 2 weeks without riding, never mind.
