  1. It's all down to the alloying elements really, although a reduction in density generally results in lower hardness and therefore quicker wear rates.
  2. really intrigued how they came up with the design for the booster good ol case of style over function methinks
  3. Theat's strange, did you download it from the official site? I've been using it for years and naver had anything spy-ware related from it.
  4. Tragic accident. Condolences to all involved. Unfortunately these things happen when no-one was doing anything wrong. Roads are dangerous places for reasons such as this, and therefore people need to take care in order to minimise accidents, but by the sounds of the description the driver was doing nothing wrong and was driving in a sensible manner, it's always difficult knowing how fast to drive when the weather is cold, as this has shown it only takes one patch of ice (which could have been in the shade, and so remained) to cause you to loose control. It's a natural reaction to look to blame someone when something tragic like this happens, but it isn't always someones fault. If your blaming the driver, surely equal responsibility lies with the cyclists as they were acknowledging the risks of riding on the road and unfortunately chance was against them.
  5. Well, so far it seems to be going ok, all the drivers have installed fine and there were the drivers for my wireless card in the standard install set so no issues there. The only program i've found that doesn't work so far seems to be the free avg antivirus. Ill spend a bit more time playing with it at some point and installing all my CAD/CAE programs to see if there are any advantages to be had with them. Initial impressions are that windows does run very well indeed with less lag than the 32bit version, it may just be the fresh install with no crap in it yet, but well see as i get everything i usualy use up and running.
  6. When you post you'll notice your name has changed to black, and that your group has changed to member Oh and the validation system has been tested thoroughly in the past, and it keeps the main section clear from spam and shite posts. Andy P.S welcome to the main section Dr Greenthumb
  7. what music do you like? There are loads of clubs but whether they will be good to you depends on what music you like. I go to a few rock/indie clubs in highbury and islington and camdon.
  8. theres a version of win xp pro in 64-bit im pretty sure there will be both a 32 and 64 bit version of vista, although there were rumours of it being 64 bit only a while back. There are 32 bit drivers for vista on my mobo manufacturers website though so it should be both. I've got a full set of drivers for all my hardware now bar my bt wireless card which i dont use at uni anyway, so ill be having a play and let you know the results in a few days
  9. certainly would, for no other reason than there are thousands of model papst fans which all perform differently, so it can be real hit and miss as to whether you get the exact one you want, with the akasas they are universally available and they only do one model for each size meaning no confusion over part numbers etc. I have mine running at under 800rpm (controlled through speedfan) and it is silent, cant even hear it with all the other fans in my system stopped!!
  10. jesus is it really that difficult to read, i was going to have a look through your last few posts and see about validating you but you just earned an extended stay in NMC.
  11. If ALL you do is vid and pic editing then yeah, but for anything else its gotta be a win based PC. Games on a mac, no thanks, CAD/CAE on a mac, now stop before i fall off my chair laughing.
  12. Ooooo, forgot about case advice/cooling. As currie said, a 120mm fan will always be quieter for the same airflow, and to this end try to get a case that has 2x120mm fans holes in it. Generally there will be one at the front to push air over your hd(s) and one at the rear to pul the hot air out of your system. In terms of fans themselves, some cases come with them whilst others (usually cheaper ones) don't. If you want quiet running then i recommend the akasa amber range of fans, I currently have a 120mm one on my cpu cooler and it's damn quiet. The loudest componants in the system i suggested above are likely to be the northbridge fan (on the motherboard) and the CPU fan. Both of these can be fairly simpy replaced if they are too noisy, the northbridge can be replaced with a passive (no fan) zalman heatsink and there are loads of relatively quiet cpu coolers out there for varying amounts of money, depending on what sort of performance you want. The best are the thermalright xp and si ranges. I have one of the xp120's which takes a huge 120mm fan and is cooling my heavily overclocked single core athlon 64 processor excellently (its at 36 degrees at the moment, 4 degrees above the case temp!!), although they are quite difficult to fit and some motherboards have problems with their size being so close to the board. I would recommend a thermalright SI-120 which is a newer design and raises the heatsink further away from the board and so has resolved the fitting and clearance issues of the xo-120 but with virtually the same performance, you'll need to buy a seperate fan to go on this but as i already said an akasa amber will do a fine job.
  13. They generally attach above the brake and are clamped on using the brake mounting bolts (whether there be two or 4 dependant on the brake and it's configuration) and oppose the force of the brake pads exert agains the rim, which in most cases causes the brake to rotate and the stays to flex outwards, hense reducing the overall force acting between the brake blocks and the rim. In essence they reduce the energy used by the frame as it flexes resulting in a larger amount of energy and therefore the force exerted by the pads is larger.
  14. I'm going to be giving my 160mm avid the boost to a 203 rotor in the next few days so ill let you know how good the adaptor lark is , now i've got some smart guys i should be safe with a decent front disc, whereas i was a bit dubious at having a very sharpe disc on a set of old lite guys
  15. I'm not a fan of spy sweeper, i've used it in the past and found it screwed my computer up on more than one occaision
  16. Here's my recommendation. CPU: AMD X2 4200 Mobo: Asus A8N-E RAM: Geil Value 2GB GFX: Leadtek 6600GT 128MB PCI-E HD: Samsung Spinpoint 250GB SATA2 8MB cache DVD: NEC DVD+-RW and Sony DVD-ROM PSU: Hiper Type-R 580W Cost: £780 Thats a fairly balanced spec and with it having a SATA2 drive you'll get decent sustained data transfer speeds which is where you'll see benefits when doing video encoding etc. For the perfoemance benefits of a raptor drive i wouldn't bother, partition a larger drive and use that. The benefits you see from 2GB of system RAM will be good too as less will be needing to be stored on the hard drive in the windows swap file, with more capacity being available for large image editing and video encoding. The dual core processor will allow you to keep doing other things whilst encoding videos etc, and once these programs are multi-threaded to take advantage of both cores you'll have the option to get them done in half the time!! [attachmentid=2587] The you'll need a case and monitor or two. In terms of monitors, i would say a pair of 17" would be better than one larger one. You can have two applications at full screen, or split a program such as premiere across both screens and have it all organised a bit more neatly. I've used both one large and two smaller screens and much prefer two smaller screens. Whether you want CRT's or tft's it's up to you, go have a play on both and see which you prefer. I'm still a CRT user as i don't like tft's for games or CAD applications unless they are very high quality expensive ones (which i don't have the money for ). If your on a budget and have the space a pair of decent quality 17" CRT's that do at least 75Hz refresh rate at 1280x1024 would be perfect.
  17. Source engine taking advantage of it sounds good. Apparantly there are some significant gains for 32-bit apps in the 64-bit windows environment, oh well, ill be able to try it out soon
  18. Yeah, The area of fontainebleau is huge though and has stupid amounts of areas similar to buthiers, might have to make a special trip to buthiers though if none of the climbers are wanting to go, kinda like a pilgrimage
  19. Its just a matter of filing down the lever blade so it is all the same thickness as the thinnest part (where brass tpa part sits, then filing down the brass bushes until the whole lot fits inside the body. As for the TPA is all works as it does in an RB lever. I've had mine like it for about 18 months now with very few problems. Unfortunaley my bike is up at uni and i'm at home so i can't get you a pic right away, howeve i'm off to uni tomorrow so i'll try to remember to get a few when i get back.
  20. I'm heading down to the whole fontainebleau area (which includes buthiers) with the uni mountaineering club and Tic, for a week of fun the first week of the uni summer hols, 27th March to the 3rd April, so looks like ill be around when the koxx days are on, probably won't bother going though, as ill be far to busy riding the HUGE area where all the climbers are going to be, will be popping up to buthiers at some point though during the week.
  21. They look very much like they are exact copies of the ashtons, probably just ordered from the same taiwanese factory that ashton have theirs made in.
  22. hmm, this has been something i've been considering as i've now got a 64-bit opteron, can all 32-bit apps run in it, or do some have problems? Drivers wise i shouldn't have a problem as my motherboard is fully 64-bit supported for drivers and apart from that i only have a gfx and wireless network card (guarentee the net card wont have drivers available though, but i only use it at home). Am about to get an old 20 gig hd back off my gran so might whack it on there and see how it runs.
  23. I'm another AVG user, and have been for about 2 years. That combined with the free zone alarm firewall and I've not had a virus since they have been installed Verified the lack of virus' using the online kapersky virus scanner (shame it doesn't get rid of the critters too) which is meant to be one of the best pay for virus scanners out there. Oh and AVG has an automatic update feature too which can be sheduled for any time during the day (and there are updates available EVERY day!!) and a regular scan which can be scheduled for however frequent you want (daily/weekly/monthy).
  24. Added to the stolen bikes thread If you've got any pics post them up, will help if anyone happens to see/be offered the stuff.
  25. any info on what wheelsize it takes?
