I must be lucky as I've never had a problem on trains with my bike, admittedly, i do only do very short journeys (luf to notts or leics, and outskirts of london in, on a local train, so don't really have the greatest of experience. However I've found the midland mainline guys to be really helpful, both the platform staff at notts and leicester and the on train guys. Will be interesting to see if this changes now though, although genreally i always drive or get a lift these days.

wohoo, that means i should be able to do reasonably well this year as i always try to ride uci anyway (i hate smacking into stuff), now just need to get some decent practice on natty stuff, a week in the buthies area should be good for that

I've got them in my avid mechanical and to be honest the difference was barely noticeable. If you need new pads as yours have worn out then it would be worth getting them, but if your current avids have life left in them then i wouldnt bother. I've found replacing the cable has made the biggest difference to the performance of my brake.

you sir, need to get some learning done On a more serious note, i've found that a really well thought out evening where you cook, and sort out things to do, romantic setup, including the bedroom is always a winner. Obviously some nice underwear as a gift always helps things along, then just make everything about her in the bedroom.

care to expand, i haven't got the foggiest what your on about!!

cheers for all the recommendations guys, i went for the linear slic as i said above and it feels soo much nicer than what was on there, much sharper. The brakes absolutely awesome now

It's done in a subjective manner, basically, there's no fixed number of posts you have to get to before you can be validated. For instance I've validated people after as few as 3 good quality well thought out posts, yet there remain people in here with hundreds of posts that are all tripe. Basically if you type well and behave in a good manner, one of the mods or admin will spot this and validate you. The way i validate is if i see a good post from you i go back and look at your recent posts and see if they are also good, if they are, i'll turf you into the members area

hmm, sounds like its a hub and chain tension related problem. It may be that the chain hasn't been shortened enough and that the rear mech is outside of its optimum tension window, resulting in slackening and then jamming problems. Iffy, is the problem more promenant when the chain is in the inside gear at the back? if so any chance of a couple of pics of the chain on the largest and smallest rings at the back to assess the chain tightness. If it is a result of a long chain, then it certainly is a warranty issue, and to be honest as the problem has occured during normal use (which for a trials bike includes trials funnily enough) then it should be covered by the warranty too. If it's a quality problem with the rear hub (i.e its too "sticky") then its a shimano issue too, which saracen could persue to reclaim their costs.

cheers guys, i'm getting a linear slic off ed potts tomorrow

Ok, so the time has come to sort out the trusty avid on the front of my bike. I've finally got some new forks so have the confidence to get a larger rotor (203mm) which I've fitted, however the cable thats currently on there is severely letting the whole system down. It's been on there for about 18 months and has been mauled in several crashes, so is in dire need of replacement. My question is whats currently considered to be the best brake cable about?

wohooo, i'm defo gonna be going to the region with some uni mountineering peeps for a bit of bouldering action, our campsites only about 10 miles/mins (i cant remember which) away from buthiers so..... may make it down on one of the days

Ill be ignoring that then. I'm just interested as I've heard quite a lot of people use powerbooks for doing word processing etc and i wondered how much (if any) of a ballache it is file format wise etc.

Whats the compatability of office type programs on a mac, are they interchangable with ms office?
-
In reality i don't think it makes any difference which way round the disc is. I'm open to suggestions though if anyones got any good theories.

is it actually a frame problem, by the sounds of it the problem is with the cheap components on it.

mattyboy, If your friend bought it as a complete bike then take it back and get it sorted, if he has upgraded/modified anything on it then of course it's excessive abuse, for the fact that he's not done anything about it, it could probably be argued that it is excessive abuse even if it was bought as a complete bike as he has just ignored the problem. Iffy, do you have any pictures of the damage to help us visualize the damage.

I caught the end of the season 2 finale on E4 a couple of days ago and was shocked, the final scene from when ryan gets to trey's house until the end was only about 30 secs!! The full version is over 3 mins, anyone know whether thats just because it was on during the daytime (pre watershed), or have the uk tv watching public been screwed over once again?

For the work i do, a PC is the only option. The applications i use just simply aren't available for a mac. In terms of using a mac, i had to get one onto our house network a couple of years back and to be honest it was probably simpler than getting the PC's on (they were running Win ME/98 ), but apart from that i have very little experience of them. I also enjoy the hands on approach to the hardware side of things which with a mac is pretty damn restricted.

I don't think there's much more that needs saying on the front of how we moderate. As to why i shut the topic, that picture, especially the caption, is/was offensive to more than a couple of people and was reported by someone with this opinion. I took a look, found it to be offensive and closed the topic, get over it. Why was it offensive to me? well the person has absolutely no control over how they look, as you don't, and is playing out the hand she was dealt. Her physical appearance is somewhat different to most other people but that doesn't make it right to laugh at her misfortune.

Why so i can get pants performance on old hardware, i'd rather not thanks
-
Sorry but laughing at those less fortunate than you is just evil.

There are alrady versions available that do work. It's not the processors thats the trouble, it's the fact apple use a single hardware set which means all the software is optimised to run on only that hardware, and so finding drivers for motherboards etc will be impossible. Thats why apple can charge such high prices for relatively shite hardware, because all the software is optimised for only their hardware and so runs very efficiently, whereas microsoft have to cater for people running infinate different hardware setups and so their software runs relatively in-efficiently, but on faster hardware. Apple can/have to plan ahead much more as to what hardware they want to use, so when they get all the optimised code written it's already slightly out of date, but still very well, and hense attract a higher price tag. However for this reason programs that require raw horsepower (or should that be silicon power) aren't available for macs. I couldn't imagine trying to run the CAE software i've been using today on mac hardware of equivelant cost as it would be pants and take hours.

wooo, another intel dual core chip that will be crippled by sharing a connection to the memory. Should give mac users a kick up the arse performance wise, oh and in the wallet department too. But unlucky in not being able to use a proper dual core chip like the athlon X2. I can't wait to see the AX2-M chips, they really will bring insane performance to notebooks.

most modern graphics card that have both a vga and dvi out will run dual monitors. If you've got a £50 budget then you'll probably be best served by something like this "HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon 9550 128MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (R9550-TDW128-C) (GX-009-HT)" from overclockers. Don't be fooled by the advertising jargon in the description. It's blatantly not "the world's fastest and most advanced graphics board" but is a reasonable graphics card that will handle dual monitors easily and should do a reasonable job when doing video editing etc. It's not going to be up to anything special games or CAD/CAE wise, but it will be ok for what you want. My only bit of advice would be don't go for the 6200 turbocache as it uses part of your system RAM as memory slowing the rest of your pc down.
