5 1/2 year old Malcolm Smith Malcolm had a busy year. He won the Jr Nat Moto Trials for kids AMA 7 and under, he was AMA 4. He got a full sponsorship from Dagger Kayaks as the only kid on Team Dagger. He is getting fairly good at MX and bicycle Trials. Checkout his latest video above. Malcolm plays the back ground music for this video on his piano!

Because of some of you guys kind words I thought you might like to see Malcolms first MX race. http://www.youtube.com/user/coweemtns?feature=mhee Well, It has been a long time coming. I thought it would never happen. I want to Think so many of you for your kind words and encouragement over the last few years. It meant a lot. We still have tons to learn and much improvement to make. We will keep working. This race was Malcolm's first time on a gate and first start. It was really his first time riding a track that had more than his friends. After the first race his bike would not start. Jerry Mattox and Bo Miller helped feverishly trying to get it going (turned out the coil was gone). Just before the second moto Jerry grabbed Riders Nationally prepped Barrs bike and said "let Malcolm ride this". We put Malcolm's plate on the bike and rolled it to the start. The bike is totally different to Malcolm's. The handle bars are much wider, the suspension way stiffer and much more motor. Malcolm was very tentative the first lap but quickly got used to the bike (thank goodness for riding the King as much as he does) We learned a lot. We have tons more to learn. We will try to do better. We hope o race at Muddy Creek on Sun. My wife Grace and Malcolm's grandfather did the suspension for Malcolm's bike under the guidance of Chris at PR2. I think they did well. It is supposedly a very similar set up to what Adam C had when at Malcolm's size. Malcolm weighs 35 Lbs. The suspension is oh so sweet. We got it set up the day before the race. A Note The first race was the 3rd race of the morning. As you can see it was very very wet and slick. The start straight had a 40 ft section of 8 inches of muck. Thanks Steve and Malcolm

I could care less if he sticks with it and becomes a pro. I would rather he go to med school like his older brother. What I do hope is, he learns manners and not to be judgmental.

I am fairly done with this conversation. I have no intentions of being in a pissing match. To me Bicycle Trials are a game, training for other sports, although it may become a sport in the future if lots of young kids come into it. No sport will do well with those that enter it being in their late teens or twenties. You need very young people to learn and make a sport. Until bicycle trials has a bunch of kids like Charlie Rolls it is not much of a sport it is a recreational sport. That does not mean it is not cool just not a serious sport. As for the American comments this is the way I see it. First our true interest is MX. Every European racer dreams of riding and racing in the USA. All of your English racers dream of making it here. Even your young kids come here to race our big amateur events. Every great MX racer started at 3 4 and 5. Our first championship class is 4 to 6. All those kids train and train hard. Most of them have private tracks. Remember our USA team kills the world in the MX Des Nations every year. If you want your sport to grow you need to dream of lots and lots of little kids like Malcolm. Until then it will be a sport of guys in their 20s, 30s and 40s that wish they had the skills Charlie Rolls has.

It is funny I thought you guys might like to see what he is doing. I can keep it to myself. I could care less if he is doing trials in 10 years. As any of you see bike Trials are just a part of what he does. I am teaching all 2 wheeled riding so that he can make a choice. It is funny when people in MX see him they assume he will be a MX rider. When you guys see him you assume it is bike Trials. When Moto Trials people see him they assume it is Moto Trials. He happens to be good at golf and the piano. His friends are in the sports. It is funny, one of the top armature kids MX coaches said "be warned that if Malcolm gets good everyone will want part of him and everyone will hate you. You have to ignore both". I am raising him like I raised my older son who was a top whitewater Kayaker. He was a top US kid in the sport (3rd at 13, in 19 and under US Jr Nationals) and went on to the National Team. He is now in medical school. He still loves kayaking and goes as often as med school allows. He is 34 years old. As I said I thought you guys might like to see. I will keep it to myself. As for bike trials it is just another sport. He is good at them all and will probably do MX. The top MX coaches in the US are already showing interest. Thanks for your concern. Sorry I offended you. Steve

I will take your advice and let him play video games all day long. Too bad you can not see the joy he gets in playing golf with his grandfather, practicing the piano with his mom and riding with his dad. I see the wisdom of letting kids do what they want every time I go to a mall. This little boy plays all day long with people who care about him. Thanks so much

His piano teacher says he needs more work on focus. i guess everyone has their own thoughts on kids. He practices, piano, golf and bikes 2 times a day each. He has mommy and daddy and grandpa, teaching him while other kids are in day care. Everyone must do what thy do. We choose to keep him busy.

I have tons to learn about this sport. I had never heard of these events. I had heard of and seen Adam and Charlie on You Tube, they are our inspiration in bike Trials. If you know them tell them that Malcolm is gunning for them. What great kids to chase. It keeps us busy learning MX, Mototrials and Bicycle Trials, but what a load of fun.

The way this video has exploded has really suprised me. With You tube you can track where views are comming from. The views have really been from all over the world from China to all over SA, to Europe and Russia and even Indoneasia and Japan and S Korea. It is kind of unreal the interest shown in this video in just a few weeks. I do not know if any of you bothered to look but you can watch him grow up on You Tube. We started making videos at 19 months old when he was riding the push bike. Thoses early videos are unreal what he was doing particularly around 28 months. If any of you know of any place to post it feel free to do so. Thanks for the interest. Steve and Malcolm Smith

Hi I guess my post was not clear and did wonder a bit. What I am interested in is where clubs might be or just hotbeds of young kids in both Moto Trials and bicycles. It has been my expierence in other sports that you get several kids together and they just explode, and the little group becomes a hotbed of talent. If there are any young riders anywhere near Malcolms age, I would love to keep in contact with them, even if it is by email and You Tube exchanges. I have already seen that in just watching a video Malcolm enjoys watching other kids more than adults.

Hi As I said in another post we are very new to this. If you watched any of Malcolms videos http://www.youtube.com/user/coweemtns?feature=mhum you can see our main interest is in motor cycles. I would say my interest is split evenly between MX and Trials. I kind of got Malcolm into the Trials thing as a after thought. What really turned me on to bicycle Trials was seeing a video of (I think his name ) is Charlie Rolls on You Tube over a year ago. It blew me away. I thought Malcolm must learn that at least as a hobby. The importer of Sherco bikes knew somone at Monty and got the bike shipped to me here in the US. I got it oer a year ago, I think it is the only 205 in the US, I know there are one or two in Canada. In the video of him on the Monty it was only like his second time on the bike. I had just gotten the cranks shortened so that he could pedal the bike. Most of his riding is on the motor cycles. Since we live in the US there is just very little trials riding. Most of what we have learned is looking at you guys videos. So far I just try to get him to ride hard things standing up. From the very first he has been taught to stand up starting at 28 months on the push bike. My big question is where are the hotbeds of bicycle trials? I think Charlie is from England. Where are the good groups of young kids? Are there any big clubs? Since we are interested in motor cycle trials are there any groups of kids that are very good that do both? What is the kids scene in Spain, I know in Spain they have the best mototrials riders, of course England has great riders also. Anyway what do you guys know about the kids groups with great kids? Is Charlie the only one?

Wow What a reply. I guess you needed to say that. I work at home on a large farm in the mountains. I am with my son all day. I have time to play with him. I consider him very lucky. All the other kids we know are in day care all day. His little rides 3 times a day take about 20 mins each. The rest of the time he does other things. No need to make mean remarks.
