Right I'm currently pricing up my wheel builds on tarty's website and they show 2 options for fixed rear hubs with cassettes both being 6 speed. My question is, where do I get a 6 speed cassette and shifter from nowadays as aren't all road on MTB stuff knocking on 9 or 10 speed? And where do I get a matching shifter as well? If anyone knows do you have a suggestion for a certain combo to go for that will do the job? Mainly wanna stick with multi-gear as not much instantly locla to me but don't wann have to pack bike in car all the time, I don't mind having a little ride out to get places. Help!!

I'll definately allow it!!

Didn't realise they made so many different types now! Last time I was riding you just got standard magura black pads or wet weather greenfrogs!
-
Better starting a new thread as this is for introductions but I'll let you off! Not necessarily, from what I've been told the best setup is disc front and rim brake on the rear although if your lads just starting he'll be fine with a set of hydraulic rim brakes front and rear, did me fine for a long time!

Hey Tracy, good luck with the search! I hope he loves his bike come Christmas!!
-
Could be on my own here! Only got a pic of my current as at work but will get pics of my last 3 when I get home hopefully!

Watched it on the iPlayer yesterday on PS3, James May's a legend! Anyone watch him when him and Oz Clarke did the tour trying to find Britains best beer?? Basically spent the whole series gettin smashed!

Absolutely unbelievable! To have your skill and bravery alone is a massive inspiration, superb site mate, hope you go far with your demo's.
-
Superb, just found a pic of same maggies as mine on the net, these are in slightly better nick than mine though!

See I'd have thought it'd have been the other way around, although 2nd hand front discs seem to go quite cheap so may be worth picking one up. Anyone got any preferences on brand? Last time I was into riding I think Magura had only recently brought out their louise disc so it was only a choice between Hayes or Hope!

Gonna have to have a look at this when I get home (social and networking sites blocked at work!) as I go to the gym (or try to) about 3-4 times a week doing pure weights so will be interesting to see if I can focus on certain areas and notice a difference!

Just been wondering, seen as there's the odd post of a disc brake for sale and always popping up on ebay is it worth getting one or 2 for my Heavy Tools rebuild? And if so, what would people recommend, just the front, rear or both bearing in mind I've got a set of blue maguras for the other wheel.

Might sound a bit gay but I reckon that chain looks quite good!!
-
Thanks for the suggestion, will look into them. Gonna see how I go with the Heavy Tools when it gets built an may possibly swap to a newer trials specific frame and use the Tools for a bit of freeriding! Itching to get her built up now though as keep watchin vids on youtube an gettin excited!

No mate, I'm 26 so bit older than you boys an been out of the game for about 7 years. Bikes been in bits for quite a while but hopefully gonna get it rebuilt after christmas, used to spend a lot of time down near the canal in Whaley when I was riding and down the Torrs (when it was dry!) Hopefully see you out and about when I get back on the road!

Nope all input is welcomed, by me at least. Good to get the views from someone who doesn't ride, how olds your son and how longs he been riding?
-
I'm liking it, isn't it funny though how when your riding and doing some impressive gaps like the steps at the beach the people in the background don't even notice! How old are you?
-
I'd advise trying to have a go on each before you decide, could make all the difference of not wasting your money, maybe there's some people on here local to you who you could catch at a meet and just have a sit on their bikes?

Looking forward to seeing the finished article, you got any ideas what colour your gonna paint? Don't forget when you've sanded the frame down to give it a good clean with something alcohol based to clean any grease or grime you can't see off or the paint won't stick and you'll have patches. I forgot when I did my old trials bike years ago, was a right pain in the arse having to start from scratch again!!

Not sure if you can still get hold of it but look for a DVD/video called Dirty Tricks and Cunning Stunts or just Tricks and Stunts on some places. Thats what me and my cousin used when we first got started, was quality at the time and always worth dusting off for a rewatch. Might not be your cup of tea but worth a go, got all the basics covered and shown by Hans Rey and a quality comedy action film at the start!

Thought I'd post how my Heavy Tools used to be setup and what's gonna need replacing so any recommendations are welcomed. Trying to rebuild on a bit of a budget but I don't want everything to be bottom dollar, mainly as I may upgrade further in the future so looking at things like disc compatible hubs just incase! Frame - Heavy Tools Trials in blue Forks - Unbranded chrome but pretty strong Headset - FSA I think, were quite good at the time and still works perfect Stem - Specialized off my old Rockhopper, god bless her sniff sniff Bars - Azonic downhill riser bars BB - Shimano UN52 - knackered and needs replacing, looking towards ISIS Cranks - Specialized strongarms - one bent so need to go Pedals - DMR V8's in blue Bashring - Can't remember but had jagged edges round it?! - need replacing Wheels - Sun BFM's front on Shimano STX hub and rear on STX-RC - gonna replace as hubs are pap, is it worth keepin rims on new hubs? Rear mech - Shimano STX Brakes - Must be an antique by now Maguras, not sure on the model but they're the blue ones that were cheapest you had to buy braces seperate for but not the plastic handle ones What you think? Bearing in mind trials was only just getting properly noticed at the time, Pashley just brought there frames out with the Tongue brothers help etc so it was a bit of a mission to get specific trials bits! For the rebuild looking toward new BB (ISIS?), cranks, hubs if not wheels, and drivetrain and looking at front mount freewheel with 6 gear fixed rear or something like that. Been out of the game for a while so not sure who's good now and what setup in terms of freewheel position works best. Back in the day was all SRAM and Shimano for anything drivetrain so advice very much appreciated!

Hurray!!! Been trying to get registered since yesterday afternoon and finally got the validation to work!! Anyway enough of that, hi all, I'm Dave and I'm from Chapel in Derbyshire. Been out of trials for a long time now, started back in 1999 on an unbranded frame built up on the cheap (was only 16 and at school!), moved to a Specialized Rockhopper which I must admit was perfect for the job, until I snapped the downtube one day, so I ended up buying a Heavy Tools Trials frame (bout 19 by now) and building that up. Sadly when things started to break and I couldn't afford to fix it got hung in the garage and has been there ever since, until now. Got a new job recently which means spare cash so getting the old girl rebuilt, should hopefully be done by New Year as looking at Christmas to supply some of the bigger things like wheels so will be back out and about really soon all being well! Look forward to possibly meeting a few of you and having a laugh on the forum!
