My Recent Trail Tyres Thread

Dual Ply tyres on a 'Trail' bike? A change to Single Ply tyres will make a HUGE difference to how the bike feels! While you're at it ditch the Super Tacky tyres and put some 60a's on there.

Bottom, middle. Is that Mr T?

Cheers for pointing that out John, I got my dates mixed up

I don't see what your problem is? No new members have actually posted in this topic!

I think I will come along on Sunday for a social and to catch up with people I have not seen in years but I doubt I will be on the trials bike. Matt Purdon will also like this: I have some 2" rise Azonic DW's in my shed doing absolutely bugger all that I will bring along. They are battered but I don't think they have started creaking (yet)

Dammit, there is a Hill Climb and Urban DH that day, although I haven't entered it yet so could be tempted to come along on a non trials bike and take in the atmosphere...
-
Play around with bar height and angles (roll the bars backwards and forwards) Also badly angled brake levers can cause back problems...

I also wouldn't want to run 203 rotors with quick release axles! The forces a disk brake has on an axle can cause it to move around in the drops outs. These forces would be much higher with a 203 rotor so I personally wouldn't run 203 rotors without bolt through axles! I would personally go 180 front and 160 rear, this will be more than enough for everything apart from DH. Saying that, I ran that size rotor setup on Shimano XT brakes in the Alps for 1 week and didn't have any major braking issues!

My Commencal has gone through a lot since I bought it in 2008 so this winter I gave it some much needed TLC! I treated it to: Enduro bearings on all rear suspension pivots TFTuned Rear Shock New Cassette, Chain and e13 Chainring Superstar Plasma Chain Guide Full Gear Outer Thomson Seatpost Hope QR Seat Clamp Wellgo MG1 Pedals Sealed FSA Headset New Tyres I'm still really enjoying this bike, it's just so much fun

One that fits your head? Even if you get a 'decent helmet' it is no good if it doesn't fit and is uncomfortable!

A quick update for anyone that might be interested. I went for a 2.35 60a Maxxis Minion F on the front and a 2.10 60a Maxxis Crossmark on the rear. I'm a happy chappy! The bike rolls noticeably quicker and I still have the confidence of a knobbly front tyre. The Minion seems to roll quicker than the old High Roller and the Crossmark provides much less rolling resistance, on road sections the tyres are much quieter with less dragging noise. When pointing the bike down a hill the Minion is nice and predictable and although the Crossmark doesn't feel as forgiving as a High Roller I am getting used to it and am yet to have any major grip issues! I have used the tyres mainly for XC but have also played around on dirt jumps, a pump track and spent a weekend in Wales riding harsher trails.

The only way I know of would be to fit the guide behind the BB cup using an adaptor (ISCG 05 to BB Adaptor) ISCG 05 is larger than ISCG Old so you might be able to make up some sort of adaptor but I have never seen one. The measurements can be found here

I didn't watch it, I went out riding all day instead There are highlights on BBC1 now

Fred's still got the skills

I have been reliably informed that the push up is about 2 hours, the same reliable source has ridden all the routes and advices me that the Rangers Path is by far the most interesting although the Llanberris Path is meant to be silly fast If you push up the Llanberris Path you have to cycle down it because the Rangers Path descends to a totally different side of the mountain, or if you follow the instructions in the Planet Fear article they go up the Llanberris Path, descend part way down the Rangers Path then push up Telegraph Valley to rejoin the end of the Llanberris Path. I did manage to find a helmet cam of the Rangers Path from top to bottom and it certainly looked like an awesome track. I was planning to push up and descend back down the Rangers Path last weekend but no one else in my group was up for it and I had enough other options to keep myself busy anyway so decided to leave it for another day, Snowdon isn't going anywhere

I want to ride the Rangers Path on Snowdon, it's meant to be the most technical and it frequently causes a fuss on the STW forums with people moaning its impossible unless you are a gnarcore DH rider with 99 inches of travel, full face helmet and body armour STW Forum - Snowdon Rangers The Truth Planet Fear Article

Just spent 4 days based near Machynlleth. The trails we rode: Nant-yr-Arian - Syfydrin Trail. Machynlleth - Mach 3 and Cli-Machx Trails. The 'trail centres' were nothing like I had experienced before and had a different feel to them. They were definitely more XC biased and less man made than the South Wales trail centres but the views were really nice and it was awesome to be out on the bike! Nant-yr-Arian had a visitors centre, the Mach 3/2/1 trails start in the Machynlleth town centre and the Cli-Machx trail has a car park but no visitors centre. The trails were very quiet which I was shocked about considering it was a long weekend! The Cli-Machx trail was the most man made trail we rode all weekend, the final descent was good fun and the climbs were not too harsh. The other 2 trails had less man made sections and made use of byways and country roads with some longer harsher climbs. We wouldn't have actually got around the Mach 3 trail without use of a map which was a nice change compared to just following arrows on man made single track and fire roads. There is a voluntary ban on cycling the main Snowdon byways between 1st May and 30th September between 10am and 5pm. More info here.

Demand an x-ray then post it up on here

Thanks for all the replies, I think I have made a decision. Single Ply Maxxis Minion F 2.35 on the front and a Maxxis Crossmark on the rear. Does anyone know what the sizing of the Crossmark is like? Will 2.10 width be all good or would I be better off going for the 2.25?
-
The High Rollers are both 2.35, 60a rear and 42a front. Whatever I get I wont be going for 42a on the front again I'm just after suggestions really because I fancy a change...

Someone who hops around on a bike that does not have a seat and is an active member of an internet forum about the sport could easily be referred to as a geek. Oh wait, that makes Dave a geek too?

Sorry, a tyre thread for you I have been running 2.35 Single Ply High Rollers on my Commencal Meta 5 for ages. The bike used to be more of a 'do it all' bike but I now have a Giant Glory for DH duties, the tyres need replacing so I am now considering a change. I previously ran Kenda Nevegals and loved them until I realised how shit they are at resisting pinch flats and thorn punctures so soon went back to the trusty High Rollers. I like the predictability and feel of High Rollers but also think that I would benefit from a faster rolling tyre, especially seeing as the bike is now being used mainly for XC and singletrack. My current considerations are: Another set of single ply High Rollers and just put up with the drag Single Ply Maxxis Minions Maxxis Advantages (Note I am a bit of a maxxis fan! haha) What tyres do people recommend? I'm not an all out XC whippet and enjoy the down hills more than the up hills, basically I would like a less draggy tyre for the up hills that still performs well on the down hills and fast singletrack...

That's your problem right there.
