If try-all is too expensive, i'd buy Eagle claw rather than maxxis. Of course maxxis are cheaper, but monty's tyres are wider and have better compound, in my opinion (talking about rear).

Sprung tensions are surely better. They keep the tension better, because when you just tighten the bolt and make it hold the tension, it usually can't take it. I think you could also make a spoke tensioner and give it go.

It depends on set-up, in my opinion you can ride a short frame but you need good stem and bars set up. I'm not THAT tall, I'm only 6'1", but i ride Fans which has 995 WB. But i'm running it iwth long stem, decent rise and bars with nice sweap. Maybe you can try a longer frame9if you have a possibility) and see which is better for you.
