  1. dont mind the cold....but whats the point riding in the rain. mostly hate the frost or slimy surfaces more than coldness.
  2. oh right...no prob then! Just got one on ebay for £16.....someone got it with a speedhub but has horizontal dropouts so no use for it. (apparently) Ill see how it goes, cheers for everyones help
  3. I was also going to suggest the loctite route....
  4. People are suggesting different things and Im assuming its the tensioner but I appreciate everyones help - its a tw@ to ride when its skipping all the time. What do you use to space the rohloff then?
  5. Ive seen a 74Kingz used upwards without all the slack though? An old mech would look crap....and to me misses the point. Surely other people use fixed or single wheel sprung tensioners without all this shit. All I want is the chain not to skip, you'd think single speed would be easier. Might ride a bit more on it just low gaps and see if I can get a link out the chain. Can a rolhoff work with a wide chain?
  6. I just tried pushing the tensioner up with the chain over the wheel instead of under (as if to simulate having upwards tension) and its crap - I can see how it'll wrap the rear cog a lot more but the chains really slack (even when the tensioners right against the frame).
  7. Sorry Bob, how do you mean? (lost me there)...... I took the bike on its first ride, just doing pedal kicks is fine but anything like a half to rull rotation of the cranks with pressure can make it skip. After a few hours it seems to skip less for 'normal riding' (pedalling along the street) but still did it under pressure. If it still does it after another ride Ill have a go at playing with the tensioner to tension upwards or whatever Bob's suggestion is.... .....could it be abything to do with it being a wide BMX style chain? (have only used 9 spd chains before).
  8. any pics of a 4Jeri or similar tensioning upwards?
  9. Its a new chain, I cant shorten it anymore than it is and I dont want to buy a £50 tensioner - how do I get more 'chain wrap'?
  10. sponge - thanks for taking the time to type all that but its exactly what Ive done! the chain Just wouldnt reach the next link so thats literally as short as it can run (unless like I said it stretches a bit) and that was without tensioner etc. I think the difference in how high the tensioners is running between your bike and mine is prob due to chainstay length affecting chain length. chainline is spot on - using the bar on tensioner as well so its not 'pulling' it sideways.....maybe it'll just wear in, I dunno. Pissing me off though.
  11. please ignore the rest of the bike - it was only sort of bodged together with old stuff while I was collecting parts but it's the best one I have showing the chain - is this right?
  12. its an 18t front / 16t rear....I played about with the 4jeri to see it it could be modified to push upwards but it doesn't look like it'd tension the chain even if I could get it to do that?
  13. Unless it stretches with a bit of riding I cant take anymore links out.... when I stand the bike up and watch the chain as I turn the crank you can see the chain 'bounce' on the way out the tensioner.....it's fecking new though?!
  14. OK, so theres a heatsink ring at the front (not new but not worn), trialtech at the back (new), KMC wide chain (new) and a new 4Jeri tensioner and its skipping.... The freehub is fine as I have been running it previously on a geared bike with no problems and the chainline looks spot on.....so any ideas what could be skipping?
  15. Thanks for posting that - made me smile thinking about summer riding. I only know what Ive read on here about Beau Forrest but I hope his family know how respected he was and how much his riding mates miss him.
  16. Your right, I dont - I just think you're a dick.
  17. I wasn't specifically referring to those comments, just your general attitude in many of your posts....sometimes your points are helpful, but delivered in a smug, patronising (like Jimmy Carr...but not funny) way. It's better that I tell you.
  18. Oh dear, no one seems to be replying so here goes... ...as said the stem depends on the bike, your height and how you want the bike to feel but have a look on Tartybikes website. The lads at the shop have always been really helpful to me so maybe one you've narrowed it down ask their advice before ordering. Chain: I got a chunky looking KMC Kool chain, again from Tartybikes.co.uk for £12 and seems to do the job nicely.
  19. Zoo York do some nice ones - I got a reversible zip up one (so 2 designs) for about £15 in a sale, and another heavyweight one for about £25. Bench ones can be picked up for about the same price, are usually heavy for winter rides and dont shrink in the wash like high streety shop ones (next, topman, etc)
  20. Bob Fossil... isn't it strange that by being a total 'david blunt' it just pisses people off. Funny that.
  21. they're designed to run on mineral oil not water with anti-freeze thrown in so ill stick with that....i understand the viscosity thing but its not like its a real effort! i have a 10 year old set that are still great, and £15 is hardly gonna break the bank. back to the lad who didn't know how to unfreeze them - cant you stick the bike indoors to thaw out?
  22. you forgot to drill holes in your cranks....I don't know how you cope with all the extra weight
  23. Dont ride with the crank loose as it'll round and you'll need a new set. ...if its not too late remove them, clean the threads on the bolts (and bb) and loctite them up.
