We're moving servers again - fun times. This time, quad core duo, 4gb ram, same datacentre. So twice as powerful as the one we're on right now. We will be hosting another large forum on the same server which is the main reason for the move. Just a pre-warning really, there will be a period of hopefully only about 2 hours downtime, but I'll keep you all updated.

Yeah theadventurists encourage using a 'crap' car, one of the rules is it has to be under a litre. The most suitable vehicle is probably a 1litre Suzuki SJ 4x4, still unsuitable for the task, but in the grand scheme of things its taking the easy option I'll donate some cash as soon as I have some!

You can create that fade effect you have on the buttons using JavaScript, check out scriptaculous or mootools. The advantage is that the resulting HTML will be more search engine friendly, and more accessible to your users... Personally I'd only use flash where there is absolutely no alternative (games, etc) - but I guess thats personal preference

Yep, seems to be a few people who arrange them now. We met a few other completely different rallys going the other way from us (mongolia to germany) - but they were doing it in 4X4's, fully stickered up with 100" travel and offroad tyres and whatnot. Our cars put them to shame Get on theadventurists mailing list. You'll be lucky to get on the mongolrally I imagine, I think last time the first hundred tickets sold in 8 seconds, and the second lot of 100 sold in 13. Something like that anyway. You could go on the African one, but you would have to be absolutely nuts. Theres also a rickshaw run, where you fly to india, when you get there you have to buy a rickshaw (one of those trike motorbike things with a canopy over it) and race from the top of india to the bottom. And another one across some cold place.

Game seems pretty good. I have no idea how to use actionscript so seems impressive. If I offered any advice though, based on what Simon says, forget ActionScript 2, do your new site with 3. Guess thats pretty obvious though

If I had £800 to spend on a PC, and only about 5 minutes to choose the bits off ebuyer, I'd probably get something along these lines. Notably, 1Tb Hard drive 4gb RAM 20" Samsung Monitor Random but seems good graphics card (I guess on price) Quad Core Processor Probably missed a couple of bits out. If you can build a bike, you can build a PC.

You missed out the hundred odd quid that just disappears every month, on apparently nothing - even taking into account the odd sandwich and what not. Plus if you're thinking salary, £13,000 (what I was on - with decent GCSEs, A Levels and half a degree) works out as £1080 odd a month before tax (great), £840 odd after tax (not so great). It soooon disappears.

That looks like a pretty nice house to be fair. Obviously it depends where you live, but I pay about £280 a month inc. bills at the moment. Before that I paid £240 + bills in Cardiff (nice house) If its £300 inc bills then thats not tooo bad I'd say, but bet you could get one cheaper. £300 a month for a uni house seems steep.

It'd be legendary if the traffic providers to the UK decided to start charging extra to Virgin Media to use their upstreams.

The thing is this is Virgin doing it, not 'the internet' - there is no restriction on the internet on how fast it can transmit data, so there's no reason for other ISPs to start doing it, its not like they're having to pay more to keep their sites running quickly (well, technically they do but its not really relevant here) All that will happen will be virgin will lose customers, they'll move over to any ISP thats not restricted, those ISPs will gain and therefore want to keep their customers and not impose restrictions, virgin will realise they shot themselves in the foot, and hopefully every other ISP will learn from their mistakes. As an example. Say Virgin came along and asked me for £X per year to keep TF running fast for their users. I'd say '**** off'. Then I'd imagine any addicted TF users on Virgin would quickly think about leaving Virgin for a decent ISP. If every smaller scale site did the same... well, Virgin would be pretty f**ked.
