Been done: its called Juice Defender and its pretty good! Got a new keyboard in a 49p sale a few days ago, it's ace. Not only does it do the predictive thing for the word you're typing, but it also tries to guess the next word for you and gets it right about 75% of the time. Really quick to type messages on, its called SwiftKey.

You could attach it to a post on TF (think there might be a 10mb limit? if its not enough I can increase it). That'll definitely tell you the number of downloads and maybe who downloaded it. Down side is they'll have to be a member of TF to download it.
