I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Pretty much my thoughts exactly. As I mentioned one post up, we need to encourage new members and new riders to get involved. In my opinion, the happy/angry (and "the" threads in general) are fairly cliquey places where generally only a select few old school members post. If I was a new member I wouldn't want to 'butt in' on a thread thats been going for the past 7 years, and nor would I want to start a new topic when there's already one that applies to what I'd want to post about. I haven't ridden for years - is the general feeling that less people ride nowadays?
-
True that, but that happens with every forum, people come and go. The thing we need to do is encourage new members to become involved, otherwise the last of the current members will one day leave and suddenly it'll just be me and Danny posting

Not sure, younger I think. He looks remarkably like one of my mates, maybe long lost brothers. My life wouldn't be worth living

He is nothing like I thought he'd look like! I think you've just typed exactly what my gf would type if she listed my cons (apart from the xbox bit) those look like some beefy speakers.

The reality is chit chat is dying and has been gradually over the past 3 or 4 years. You said yourself said its 'broken'. I'm trying to fix it, looking very long term (one step back, two steps forward and all that) so it might be a while before you have to post a hat eating video, but hopefully not too long. Bacon hats don't count.

Sweet. Shame the mobile skin has that 'buy the IPS app' link, i'll ditch that one day

The difference between say 'the climbing/car/photography thread' and 'the angry/happy thread' is that discussions happen in the former, and spam happens in the latter. Is clear that even the people who post in those threads don't care what anyone else has to say, let alone people who don't post in them. "Open thread. Post 'status' update. Leave Repeat". If you have an angry post to make that is worth making, make a new topic. Instead of going into the angry thread and typing 'hate my housemates' and being ignored, post a new topic "Annoying housemates - what to do?'. It is that simple. This is a discussion forum, thats what sets us apart from facebook.

Anyone Else Having Problems Getting On Trials Forum?
tomturd replied to trials_pimp's topic in Chit Chat
I think you miss the point. The likelihood is that there will be 100 car threads over the period of a year, the old/outdated ones drop to the bottom and the fresh/popular/interesting ones naturally get bumped to the top (until they become boring or outdated) - make sense? -

You're right, its a bug in the software but it won't be fixed until 3.4. Danny has some stats, but I think the numbers were something like 2 million database rows were being inspected for every topic view. That's the opposite of what I want to happen - Chit chat needs new topics to keep things fresh and interesting, the same as every forum. Otherwise it get stagnant, members go elsewhere, and the trend continues down and down. I'm personally pretty bored of seeing the same 6 or 7 topics for the past 5/6/7 years :/ We used to have heated discussions, people getting riled up, banned all over the shop, sneaking back in, starting up new discussions - those were fun times (if not a little stressful). Its partly my fault for not manning up years ago and saying 'oi, make a new topic you lazy bast' - but its pretty difficult to do that when you know that some of the older members will kick up a fuss. What I certainly don't want to see is the same 6 or 7 topics being posted in in a few years time. Similar topics are cool, for example 10 individual 'my car' topics are fine with me - it means the interesting ones will naturally stay at the top of the forum, the boring ones will drop off the front page - that's basically how forums are meant to work, big topics break the convention. -
Everyone can see everyones here, either on the home page or http://www.trials-forum.co.uk/statuses/all/

Status updates are back to please put your happy/angry thoughts there. Yep, we still have some biiiiiiig topics to sort out, angry/happy were the main offenders but we still need to deal with the others everything else is explained here: http://www.trials-fo...n-trials-forum/

They're somewhere, we need to split the topics up before putting them back into chit chat. Please feel free to create 'my car' threads, it doesn't all have to stay in here (and hopefully it wont mean we end up with another forum crashing situation a few months down the line )

They're somewhere safe, Danny has just split the topics. The huge threads are causing the server errors that have been reported (bringing down the whole server - so that includes theminiforum.co.uk who we also host), so they're hidden for the time being. Basically if someone looks at one of them it could bring the server down again. (lol). We're tying to work out a way to work around it. The super threads are part of TF history so we don't want to get rid of them totally, but we're not entirely sure what to do yet. It could mean the mega threads get their own section, or maybe splitting them up into monthly threads (or something else - any ideas?) I'm not sure. Personally I see this as an opportunity to encourage a higher turnover of current, concise and relevant topics. Having seen the days of 20 or 30 topics posted in chat chat per day (which is the reason these threads were started back in 2005), to where we are now, I think we've lost some of the (for want of a better word) excitement of chit chat. Its a tricky situation as we want to keep our older members happy, but we also need to provide a place where new members feel encouraged to participate and eventually become the next generation of 'older members'. -
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/it.htm I think you can make £7475 profit a year without paying tax.

I'm sure you can link to it seeing as its such a monumental achievement! http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/books/trashzen_your_complete_guide_to_trials_riding/c547p11850.html Congratulations, could have done with one of these about 10 years ago

You should be able to change it back to mobile now

Sounds perfect. My parents bought me a 1.1 peugot (ok, I dont know how to spell it and I can't be arsed to google it) which lasted roughly 8 days after I passed my test. After that it was back to an old X Reg fiesta mk 1 that they also had since new. Turned out to be a really fun little car to bimble about in, fairly reliable if you knew how to work it and great for going to the beach. So yeah, old cars are more fun. If I had the choice again between a newish 106 and an ancient fiesta I'd go for the fiesta

Bear in mind that linux filenames are case sensetive (windows isn't, which is why it might work on your computer, but not on your server) - so make sure the file names and the references in your HTML match up. For this reason its usually best to stick to lowercase everything when doing websites
-
certainly, that's why we're trials-forum.co.uk and not trialsforum,co.uk

Same as muel, make sure you get your domain seperately. I'm not a fan of 123-reg, domainmonster gets my vote. For hosting take a look at hostingreborn.com - PAYG hosting run by an old work mate of mine who is pretty good. cheap cheap too. Once you have both, you need to log in to the place you bought your domain from and change the domain nameservers to point to your new host (check the FAQ section on your host, look for "ns1.thehostsdomain.com" and "ns2.thehostsdomain.com"). That basically links up your domain name with your hosting - might take up to 24 hours to start working. After that, log in to your new host using an FTP client and upload your html files to the public_html folder. thats pretty much it!

Hmm, I just tested and its working for me - thats not much help to you though which browser are you using? tried ctrl+f5?

Site News: Tapatalk Installed
tomturd replied to tomturd's topic in Trials-Forum News, Updates & Suggestions
We used to have it installed, but not since we upgraded a few days ago. Have you tried the mobile skin (its pretty sweet) or the invision iphone app? If there's big demand for tapatalk we can put it back on, but personally I'd rather avoid it if possible! -
CTRL+R or CTRL+F5 or clear your cache There should be a 'users browsing this topic' bit right at the bottom of the page?
