Ha, tell me about it. I was thinking I'd get away with not taking the ceiling down, but once I spotted that the decision was made

plasterboard on the ceiling. tip: if you ever have to do this, rent one of these devices. wired in spotlights - these are perfectly geometrically aligned. added about another 5 hours onto the job as i had to put the board up, mark out, take boards down, drill holes, put back up and fish the wires through. totally worth it thought about putting a log burner in here, but the chimney is f**ked and it'd cost me about a grand to sort it out. home cinema wiring, ethernet, power, surround speakers etc.. extended the mains ring meself, pretty chuffed and I'm 90% sure I haven't broken the law in doing so. boarded this is a cat I've made friends with plastering commences painting Thats pretty much it. My life for the past 9/10 months

downstairs, this is the one i was looking forward to but also dreading - at this point upstairs was pretty much sorted so I moved the TV and sofa upstairs. This is a huge room that had previously been knocked through. suspended roof with polystyrene tiles and curtains that disappear into the ceiling. as it was when I moved in (minus the crap I've filled it with) my gf's christmas present on the wall, I don't think she likes it as much as I do... (you'll be right in thinking thats a lion, a tiger and a leopard striding together - pretty sweet) seriously - who does this? what were they thinking? glass stair thing removed with some free labour glass door thing coming out ceiling coming down this is the frame that the suspended ceiling was attached to back to the original ceiling re: the lintel above the fireplace, the plumbers words were "that doesn't look too clever" - never a truer word spoken. As you'll see in a bit, it is now safely covered up for the next unlucky soul to uncover in 25 years time. took the bricks off the front of the fireplace. this was a proper 'wtf have i done' moment. ceiling stripped back to joists - about 30 trips in total to the tip. luckily its only 5 mins drive from my house. I'll get a skip next time.. 2x2 battens on the ceiling. Pretty annoying, the floor joists are 6" but where they'd put the stairs in they'd used 8" joists, so i had to bring the whole ceiling down 2" to get it all level.

epic bumps coming up.... that door bathroom now it looks a little bit like this but with teal painted walls dont have a 'before' picture of this room unfortunately, but imagine the worst of the 70's and you're close. Opened up the fireplace but unfortunately nothing salvagable behind, whole room replastered thanks to roman the polish plasterer.

You've touched upon something I've been thinking about a lot over the past year or so. That being that if TF is to continue being the best then we need to set ourselves apart from what you could just as easily get from facebook. Gone are the days where MSN and forums were the only place to chat with likeminded people. Boring There's nothing to 'take on board' really, thats just my thinking and I'd value your opition on what you think of.. my thinking. Forgot to add earlier, was in a bit of a rush, but I agree that in the couple of years I was pretty much AWOL, in hindsight, its clear we could have done with some more mods. The problem was I drifted away slowly, didn't really notice it was happening and before you know it its too late to get back into it. Complacency is the word, I think. The past year for me has been going to work, coming home, working on house, spending time with gf, going to bed. Basically my priorities changed, sorting out a house to live in was more important to me than monitoring TF, and monitoring TF is really all or nothing - you can't pop in for an hour a week and expect to keep on top of things. Excuses excuses of course, but more importantly I have more free time now and I want to help improve what we have.

I do, I also see where you're coming from. However (and this isn't me not listening, this is just what I think), I spend a LOT of time thinking about TF, where its heading, the poor decisions I've made in the past (some that are still with us) and most importantly how members from each side think - not just one member, not just old members, not just seniors, not just new members, but everyone. For instance, riding my bike to work this morning I was thinking about the Damon W thread in disputes, seeing people take digs at Ali C and wondering what to do about it - what do I do? I don't know the full story, there are clearly a few people on 'one side', but was what Ali said out of place? I dunno, I don't know the full story - I don't want to go wading in warning people left right and center for something I don't know about. Stuff like that really barely scratches the surface of how far it goes. That's the bit you don't see. You (and all members) have the freedom to hit reply thinking only of yourself, log off and forget about it, let someone else clean up the mess if you've caused an issue. So yeah, you may be a 'human online engagement' expert but I don't think you see the bigger picture for TF, hence the ' '. I think the fact this thread has 90 odd replies in 24 hours shows that people are still passionate about this place, which is pretty awesome to see I suspect, I don't know.. but I suspect part (not all) of the reason you don't feel part of a 'community' is because you're not so much in it any more. The older members have moved on and you don't know who these new members are. Trials isn't something that people generally do forever, its something people generally do in their younger years, before they learn to drive, move out, go to uni, have kids etc. So unlike other more general forums we're always going to have a relatively high turnover of members. Ever been back to your home town, meeting the one mate who still lives there, going to the pub and thinking 'this ain't as fun as it used to be'? If you look around though you can see the younger generation have taken over the pubs, and they'll be thinking the same in a few years time. The same thing happens here, I've seen it time and time again. It hasn't been the way it used to be since day 2. The way I used to do it isn't the way I am now, that was what.. 12 years ago? I used to be pretty straight down the line. That's not me any more, I think about stuff too much. I really have to go to the pub now but I have loads more thoughts on this, especially about how facebook/twitter and 'social media' have changed peoples behaviour on the internet over the past 5 years. I'll post a topic some time

Its good to hear peoples opinions straight up. If there were such a thing as an 'unbiased palm in the right direction', then I don't think this thread needs it. I really don't. I think you need to leave the 'old TF' in the past. 2005 was not the same as 2004, and 2007 was not the same as 2008. Some things stay the same, like this thread - I'm sure we've had a few of these in the past, but other things change. Change is good, the community evolves, people move on, new members join, it goes on. Right.. Only 6 months? You got off lightly But yeah, being a mod aint easy so apply with caution.
-
To be fair, we've always had cocks on here, just as you will in any community whether it be online of off. Anyone whose ever been a mod will know its not as easy as just banning a select few in order to solve the 'problem' - the reality is that banning someone usually means plissing off all of their mates and compounding the problem. Personally I've been pretty lax with moderation over the past few years, as some will remember it used to be a pretty tight ship, but more recently I've let things run and been more reactive in dealing with reports. It sounds like this isn't doing any favours. Its been in the back of my mind to sort out some more mods - this time we'll be looking specifically for members who ride, not necessarily senior members and as per usual members who have a history of keeping balanced view (and of course, members who want to make TF a better place!). If you're interested, keep an eye out for a topic that I'll be posting soon, have a few other things to sort out first
-
One for the geeks if you haven't seen it. Petty cool, one step closer to the movies! I suspect one day something similar will be built into monitor surrounds. Not sure how much use it would be in every day life though... can't see how you'd 'click' using it

Ymsa Looking To Run Comps In Midlands Again This Year !
tomturd replied to the organiser's topic in Clubs and Competitions
Dave, if you have any ideas on promoting the events give me a shout -
Ah, I thought you meant removing the BuySell redirect - not the whole for sale section! I think I'm on thin ice at the moment so I'm not sure how removing the for sale forum would go down at the moment BuySell didn't seem to go down too well when it was first introduced... Where would the Site Suggestions / Feedback forum go? Agree that we should have one, just not sure where to put it.

Done, tried fixing the URL but it won't work for me. I assume by the lack of replies its not really wanted? If so I'll stop new items being posted in there and slowly decommission it.

So, its been over a year (wtf? when did that happen), the system has been through a few upgrades and personally I think it *looks* pretty good now, but how are the people who are actually using it finding it? lazy link: http://www.trials-forum.co.uk/classifieds/

Sounds like you've already learned a bunch of useful stuff. SASS/LESS dont seem to be too similar to OO CSS from what I can see, but its nothing complex (really simple actually, but its a nice buzzword (hate that word) to use though)

Ah right, sorry you're right I'm talking more back-endy sort of stuff. I think if you're working alongside doing a degree at the moment, then you'll be in a pretty good spot when you tell that to an interviewer. From what I can see, the only people who are getting jobs with us at the moment are the ones who are actively doing stuff at home. I realise you haven't asked for any tips, but when it comes to getting a job after uni you'd be in a pretty awesome spot if you knew (if you don't know them already) things like GIT/subversion, require.js, sass/less, backbone.js, CI - all those new(ish) things that still fall under front end dev. Put them on top of a degree and you'll look like a superstar (I may be preaching to the converted, if so I apologise!)
-
Go on then I'll take the bait.. What's the first rule?
-
Depends what they're doing really, if you're going self employed then your clients aren't going to care too much if you have a degree or not. But if you're looking for a job then uni teaches you other stuff that some employers like (for example, your ability to work to deadlines, ability to learn stuff that you otherwise wouldn't - that sort of thing). I'd say 95% of the developers here have a degree of some sort, but not necessarily computer science. Saying that I know some very successful devs who don't have degrees, but I wouldn't class these people as normal, they have brains where they just read something and they 'get it' immediately. I'm still web developing in Cardiff, soon to be made a 'business analyst' which is pretty sweet and should allow me to eventually move my life more in the direction I want it to go. Outside of work I've spent the last 8 or 10 month renovating my house, pretty relentless stuff and took about 4 times longer that I anticipated (that's why I haven't been on here much, basically been working 10-6, then working on the house until 9 every night and all weekend for the past.. too long), I'll try and dig out that old thread and update it. I don't think I'll make much money on it, if anything, but I've learnt shit loads along the way and would like to get a new house and do it all over again. This time with a more of a level head on what really needs to be done and what I can get away with leaving alone. In August my girlfriend starts a job in Pembrokeshire, so we're looking for a rental place down there. I'll be commuting from Pembrokeshire to Cardiff 3 days a week hopefully - not looking forward to the drive tooooo much but it should be nice to live outside of a city for a while

What program or language are you using? Sounds like you need a heart rate monitor with its own api, and using the API to access the data sent from the monitor - you don't want to be reading the data it sends yourself (I doubt!) http://appsparq.com/blog/?p=827 "The Wahoo Open API is still not the generic Bluetooth 4.0 Heart Rate Monitor standard API but provides a necessary front end to easy access to how the data is stored and retrieved easily!" http://stackoverflow...t-rate-monitors This is particularly good.. http://forum.polar.f...ead.php?p=60501 So, scrap those 2 links, use the bluetooth smart protocol

Why would you want to post that at all? No offence, but the vast majority of people simply don't care whether you had a nice drive home. A post like that would have lasted about 5 seconds before it got deleted for being spam a few years ago, and I think facebook is to blame for people slowly losing any sense of what is interesting to talk about. I don't think you can say it 'wont catch on' when you don't need to look far (ie, trials chat, for sale, wanted) to see that it does work. You'd think it was crazy if there was a 'brakes for sale' and a 'frames for sale' topic, wouldn't you?

Use msn or facebook chat if you want to talk about nothing in particular (tf is a discussion forum blah blah) Family guy posts: http://www.trials-forum.co.uk/topic/174432-family-guy-worst-episode/ Wine posts: http://www.trials-fo...ic/174433-wine/

I don't know what decisions you're talking about (care to enlighten me? edit: you being demodded might be it, not sure - I assure you thats just because we don't want any conflicts of interest since you started with TB, nothing more), but whatever they may be I don't think you can blame them for members getting older, stopping riding trials, buying houses, having kids etc..

Wheres the video then?
