So 0.51°C increase since 1983. Taking the most optimistic case, 0.6 - 0.2 = 0.4°C increase since say 1883. Sooo... something doesn't compute. That would indicate that the temperature rose, then fell then rose again in that period? Not making any kind of argument just saying that even within one statement it doesn't add up.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. As said before, climate change is clearly happening but the theories of what's causing it, what the end result will be, if we can affect it etc. are varied and much of it apparently guesswork. I'm still not convinced either way but also don't see a massive point in us going to the nth degree to do all we can when countries like China, India and America are burning everything like it's going out of fashion and causing far, far more damage than we can ever hope to fix.

Theoreticians won't save the planet. In fact academics researching what's happening won't save the planet, especially if the Illuminati are hell bent on taking over the world with big businesses and are in it purely for profit. And if the governments are spraying shit in the sky that's making things worse we're really f**ked. But then http://www.globalwarmingawarenessblog.com/globalwarming-is-due-to-sun-activity-and-not-co2.html

Wind tunnel manager at Southampton Uni but the way my brain works (knowing 20", 26" wheels but M5, M6 screws etc. from bikes) I tend to switch almost seamlessly depending on the application. Below about 50mm things are in mm, it then becomes inches and feet up to maybe a metre and then changes back into metres beyond that (for the most part). I guess it doesn't help that our main wind tunnels are old imperial units (one being 7' x 5', the other 11' x 8') but when I speak to customers on the phone I convert those to metric again!!

Tonnes and tons don't come into my line of work much- it's all about Newtons or kg's... Unless we're talking dimensions at which point (probably thanks partly to biking) things go from being metric at small scales, to imperial part way through, to metric again at larger scales again. "That needs to be about 10mm, but it needs to be placed about 6" from that nut and 3m up on top of the tunnel".

That can't be driveable surely?

Please don't go there. Instead go here: Cows produce approximately 150 billion kgs (150 million tons) of methane every year so should we be trying to save the planet by eating lots of burgers or attaching balloons to their bums? Also, just to go back briefly to the chemtrails thing- the theory goes that their spraying this stuff for the purpose of environmental engineering but it's being proven (?) to be making things worse? If that's the case they'll just stop spraying it. Unless of course it's just Their (yes, Them) evil plot to take over the world...

To put on a brakeless Inspired? Please don't...

I think it's fairly well known that the Earth has gone through a continual heating and cooling (i.e. self regulation) since the year dot. The thing is, whatever happens it will only affect us (which in a way is selfish to think we're all that matters)- without us the Earth will continue quite happily when we're gone. So while people say we're 'killing the planet', we're really not, just potentially changing the potential survivability for us on it. S'ok though, Jebus will save us.

Global warming is bullshit. Climate change is happening and has been happening since the earth first formed. No doubt we're having an effect on things but I would hazzard a guess that mother earth is old and wise enough to deal with things when they happen. If it results in the extinction of the human race, so be it; I won't be losing any sleep over it just yet. I think we should be turning to alternative fuels and improving the efficiency of our transportation system due to (potentially?) reducing oil reserves and for sure everyone should be doing shitloads of wind tunnel testing to improve aerodynamic efficiency. Preferably at the University of Southampton wind tunnels®.

HDD data recovery recommendations
monkeyseemonkeydo replied to monkeyseemonkeydo's topic in Chit Chat
Ah fair enough Tom, cheers for that. The most complete quote I've had is £400+VAT from MjM which in theory includes diagnosis, recovery, spare parts and a replacement drive to return the recovered data on. They were advised by the guys at uni so I think if we go ahead with recovery I'll probably send it to them. I'm currently using a digital image recovery program to try and recover as many photos from our camera SD cards and depending on the outcome of that will decide whether it's worth doing anything with the drive or not but thanks for enquiring! -

Lol. I can wait . If all else fails I'll send it to one of the various companies and see what's recoverable and the costs involved and go from there. -

Yeah I've tried giving it a knock (not too roughly mind you) with no success but may give it another thwack before committing hundreds of quid to recovery! -
When you say the chain's coming off do you mean actually coming off the drivetrain completely or just skipping?
-
Pictures of the setup? Chain line and alignment of the tensioner would be possible issues...

HDD data recovery recommendations
monkeyseemonkeydo replied to monkeyseemonkeydo's topic in Chit Chat
Hehe, yeah I know... I was careful not to sneeze while it was open! The arm is sitting part way in and doesn't move when the drive is powered up so I take it it's that which is jamming the drive and preventing it spinning up. Most places seem to offer a free diagnosis and will provide a list of the recoverable files with a price list so I think once I choose a company then I'll see what they come back with. -
HDD data recovery recommendations
monkeyseemonkeydo replied to monkeyseemonkeydo's topic in Chit Chat
Yeah, thought as much. Just wondered if anyone had a company they'd used before or even better a mate of a mate who can offer preferential rates as £200+ seems a bit on the steep side!! -
Right, so the wife dropped her 1TB portable HDD onto the block paving outside our house yesterday and it's now jammed. Taken it out of the casing and tried it in a SATA USB reader and it just sounds like the motor's stalled. Opened it up briefly and the actuator arm is jammed and not in the 'home' position but the platters appear in good condition and are completely intact. So here's the question- has anyone had to get data recovered from an HDD before (hardware issues not just software recovery)? I've been in touch with a few places today and the ballpark figure is ~£200 so I'm wondering if anyone has any experience or advice they can share. She's a teacher and the drive has a bunch of school work on it from her maternity leave and also pictures of our baby that she hasn't had backed up... Dumbass, I know. Help?!

You clear your tyres at comps more for starting a section with extra grip and less weight than anything to do with clearance. Clay is the worst though. I've been at comps in a quarry before where your wheel picks up so much clay that it is actually impossible to pedal. That stuff was so sticky that you could get off your bike and it would remain standing!
