I f**king love it, they don't like newbies that they can't meet. I went along to a day with Prawn last year, after never really posting for a year or so. Met everyone, made some friends, get on fine with everyone now. What they don't like is people nobody knows popping up and sharing nuggets of information and sharing opinions as facts. (Not saying Rich or Adam did that, but just saying that's the way it is.) Because with NL, no matter who you are and what you've done. There is always somebody who has genuinely done it better who also wants to share their experience and knowledge.

Teenage Angst Communal Agony Aunt Thread

Classy lady. -
Sounds immense! I've only been a passenger in a 964; and sat in the drivers seat and said broom broom. To date I've been in a 996 GT2 Clubsport, passenger in a 996 Turbo. driven a GT3 RS, driven a 996 4S, driven a 996 3.6 Targa, driven a 944 Turbo, a normal 944 and a 924. And they're really good. For anybody who hasn't driven a Porsche, think VW/Audi solidity and build quality with the driving feeling and precision of an MX5 but the suspension of a BMW. That's probably the best way I could describe the cheaper obtainable cars I've driven. Chase the dream Tom, now is the time before they are unobtainable.
-
Well this is what I want. Let's mess our underwear in unison. I won't stop until I get one, I don't care if it's a 964 Clubsport as above, or a Targa. I just want a 964. I would also be more than happy with an SC Carrera. Or if they drop down to 15k, a 996 Turbo. I make no mistake that a 996 will ever appreciate in value during the time frame I am working with; but I doubt they will plummet either. So a Carrera 4S also falls into my wanting list. I'm also under no illusion that I have missed the boat, and the only appreciating 996 is a GT2 Clubsport. I know this...

Well I told Mr Mk2 to sling his hook, for the best I think. The buyer of the S3 is a really good lad, and I'd rather sell it to him. Spotted this, emailing the seller to view as we speak. http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/honda/integra/honda-integra-type-r-16v-------------------2000/2702340 Try to buy it for £3000, spent £200 getting it MOT'd, £200 tarting it up, a day cleaning it and get it on eBay for £4995. Et voilà, hopefully £1300 in the kitty.
-
Well I think we would both be in a pickle. And I still wouldn't have a Mk2.
-
For 4K I could build a nicer Mk2 than that I think. Viewing the Mk2 Sunday, if I don't do the deal then the other guy is coming down at 3pm.
-
So the car has been advertised for half a day. I've got £500 deposited into my bank account to hold the car until a lad comes down from Wolverhampton to view on Sunday. I open up Edition 38; I've been offered a straight swap for what has been one of my bucket list cars since I was 16. A Schwarz black big bumper 2 door Mk2 with Edition One Recaros, gold Compomotive CH's, Weitec GT coilovers, Eibach roll bars, VR6 brakes, G60 rear beam and a 240bhp 1.8t with full QPeng MAF-less stand alone management. Jesus. So do I start my journey with 4K in the bank, or a lovely 1.8t Mk2 which will owe me £4000?

Yeah man! Remember years ago when my life was like an episode of Wheeler Dealers; I want that again. I have a 12 month plan to get myself from a £4000 S3 to a £16,000 Carrera 4S (or the like) without getting myself into any debt or credit. So fingers crossed, get the S sold for £4000, put that money into something like an e30 325i Sport, save up a grand, make the e30 mint, use that money + the saved up money to buy something a little more expensive and wash rinse repeat until I'm up to Porsche money. The other option was sell the S, get a loan for 15k, pay it off over 5 years and the monthly payment would be the same as I pay at the moment. But couldn't really see that as being the best idea, and wheeler dealing is much more fun.

Eh! That's genuine motion blur, none of this 40mph MX5 racing kiddo! Haha
-
Looking for somewhere to park around Goodwood, total nightmare.
-
Yup, I paid about £400 for it, drove it for four months and sold it for £1400 with a f**ked clutch. Morea green is cool, I think it suited it.
-
Well it's true, I don't buy shit cars because I'm not a mug. There are other awesome cars out there I am yet to buy. I'll keep you posted.
-
If you go to look at a 318, put it in fourth, hold the revs at 3500rpm and try to pull away. Just like normal, lift the clutch as though you were pulling away in first. If it slips, clutch is f**ked. If it stalls, it's not been thrashed/has a new clutch.

I'm not going to lie, and I don't mean to be rude. But I don't really care. Not that I dislike you, or don't have time. And I really really don't mean to be rude. I'm not rude on purpose if it seems that way. But this really is a terrible place to ask for "what moderately sensible first car should I buy that isn't going to be shit and boring." Because we pretty much all drive hugely impractical cars that we wouldn't honestly recommend to anybody we actually liked, but we love them even though they are ungrateful money pits. If you're going to buy something, go buy it. Drive the cars you're interested in, short list them down, find the best one for your budget and enjoy the ride. If you can't afford a 328, go buy a 318. I had a 318is, it was f**king badass.

I miss the cargo net in the back of my old one. I haven't really posted anything in here, because I have no pictures or anything to talk about it on here with. Prawn and I went to Goodwood on Sunday, and I go kicked off and black flagged for setting off every single drive by noise meter. But up until that point, the point that I was black flagged for having a car far too noisy...it was good. We took pictures together. I got a lot of passenger laps too, in a 440bhp 135i. It was nice. I spent a lot of time in this lovely lovely thing. Owned by Bon of driftworks fame. Prawn was a proud badger. He was fast and had an incident free day, which makes him a winner. Don't let him say otherwise. I also spent a lot of time in a very very very lovely GT3 Clubsport, the driver of which is a friend who we describe as "next level shit." He's fast. He couldn't gain much on Prawn over three laps after he let him pass though All in all a great day.

I'd go for a 328 myself, much more fun and just as capable. Some M3 hand me downs, a sticky set of tires. If you put 2k into an MX5 and 2K into a 328 the speed and performance difference would be night and day for your £2000 investment. If you can't drive and you're looking to learn the basics of how to handle a car, (notice I am taking the likes of Adams closed model racing, where it is one of the most accessible forms of close competition motorsport available and is most certainly NOT available for £2000 all in) then yeah I guess a £2000 POS MX5 is probably fantastic. But if you hold a full UK driving license and manage to put your own milk on your cornflakes in the morning without mummy's help then a 328 is by far and away the way to go for "a shitbox you can run into the ground." As far as a barrel of laughs hard as nails B road monster that you could abuse on the track all day an MX5 just wouldn't cut it for me. I'd need the closeness of competition and driver talent variable like Adam has to keep me engaged. I'd get fed up being passed all the time. But yeah, go buy an MX5. Lovely as a good run road car you can pootle about in and have some fun with. I think they're great things to learn the dynamics of driving in, and should see you well from a maintenance and reliability stand point. *the above point is to Hippy not Harry. I know Harry can drive, he's got buckets and everything.

They're just a bit slow though.
-
I still do. But he won't be able to buy and insure an RS, I assumed that would be taken as a given. The reason they aren't so shit is because they were assembled in the Alpine factory, far far far away from the Renault turd.
-
Pretty much. Just don't buy a corsa or a clio, because they're shit regardless of condition.
-
f**k any 1.8t car that isn't an A3. They're the lightest, the best built, the cheapest to buy and the cheapest to insure. And they are an Audi. Which makes them the best regardless. Because they aren't a Cupra, or a GTI. They're a Sport. And insurance companies don't seem to know the difference. Also, use google. Any car is a "how longs a piece of string" buy at this age and mileage. So asking questions about which one is the best is pointless, because you could go buy a 1.8t tomorrow and then have the turbo go, the oil pipe pickup be blocked, the gearbox toast, the CV joints constantly failing (despite me owning one for the last four years and up until my clutch incident being trouble free), but then you could buy an Alfa which could be perfect for the rest of time. It's not a new car, it's a £1500 15 year old shitter and there is no servicing cost comparisons, there is no common ground between any two cars of the same type. It's all a case of taking it as it comes, unless you can afford to buy one from a dealer with a warranty. As per Mikes..."had one Leon that couldn't take enough abuse, and one that's been a constant headache" My two pence, if you want something cheap, fun, easy to work on with minimal servicing costs. Go buy a Mk1 MX5. As long as you don't mind looking like a faggot they're great.
