  1. Its what I was taught with disc set up, will have to change that then with some very thin washers. my bad! with regards to bedding in, don't you find that that cooks the pads a bit matt? I avoided a hill last time and the break worked so much better, but then again the time before i tried this ride down the hill, tip water over the disc method that I read on here, and I think that was a bad idea... lol
  2. Um... I think you misunderstood! The spacer would go between the crown and crown race, not replace it! I understand how it all works thanks, I've been riding trials for 8 yrs and biking for around 15yrs. Just so its clear it would sit on the fork crown and be the same diameter as the crown and the lower part of the headset ( The crown race ) would then sit on this spacer (prob custom job) Thanks Matt. Fortunately the area designed for the crown race on the new echo urbans is a whopping 20mm tall, so i'm thinking that as long as this custom spacer is the same width on the outside as the fork crown, there will be no difference at all? Will speak to you in more detail when I see you on wednesday...
  3. Ok, can you have a at this product and then try answer the question below... http://www.stif.co.uk/gear/select_options.asp?productid=6245 This would replace the race that sits on the fork crown between the fork and bottom of the headset to raise it 5mm. having the effect of taking a standard set of 400mm forks to 405mm. My question is if its safe to use this, is its safe to just use some stem stacker's? The original problem brought up with putting stacker's between your fork crown and race is that the stacker's are of a thinner outer diameter than the crown race so its not safe. but as you can see from the Chris king product design, it also steps down to a thinner width? The reason I ask this is because I want to raise my front end up 10mm without a fork change. The only problem I can see if safety is not an issue, is that the bottom of the steerer tube is thicker where the crown race sits. Does anyone know where you can buy spacers like this? or would it have to be a custom job? does anyone know the standard measurements of the steerer thicknesses also? Thanks, Dave
  4. I've been riding for about 8 yrs now ( on and off ) and during that time i've had... Magura HS33 (old type and new, 4-bolt and 2-bolt) Avid SD7 Avid ultimate Avid Cable Disc Hope mono trials Disc (160 and 180) My overall opinion is a follows... The worst option up front by far is the HS33, it really is a rear brake champion only! Right now I run an avid SD7. There is NO difference to the ultimate in terms of performance in my opinion, PROVIDED that you get the right pads for your rim and you buy a better set of cables (Clarks I think make the high performance ones) I'm still torn between the hope mono trials 180 setup and the avid SD7 rim break overall. I run the hope Disk on my 24" and the SD7 on my 26" and I'd say there are advantages and disadvantages to each. The SD7 gets the best bite by far and is really good for wheel swaps and front wheel gaps. It goes well on a light bike to make the front end weight next to nothing but its biggest fall down in my opinion is wet weather. If you do ride in light rain, even with good pads it can start slipping and also the cables get wet where exposed, although this is a relatively minor issue. The Hope Disc is the best all rounder, it deals with the wet well. It performs brilliantly (even better now with sintered pads) and it has amazing modulation. It only lacks that instant bite of the vee. Final verdict... Comp Dry - Avid SD7 Vee Comp Wet - Hope mono trial disc (largest rotor you can manage + sintered pads) Street - Hope mono trial disc (any rotor but sintered pads) Extra tips for front break set up... SD7 - Grinded rim works well, clarks high performance cable kit, make sure they are sprung evenly and use spacers to get the pads exactly the same distance from the rim each side, take time over lining them up square. You can use pads designed for a smooth rim (with gaps/grooves) on a light grind for truly astounding bite, but don't expect them to last long! Hope mono trial disc - Sintered pads, DO NOT bed them in down a hill. They are trials specific, not designed for downhill. Doing this overheats the pads and lessens the effect of the sintering. Yes they will work well, but they will work better if you only bed them in doing trials and fight the urge with some patients. Setup the disc well with spacers so that one pad touches lightly and the other is far away. Not center! the fork side pad should be touching. Get the bleed done by tarty unless you are 100% confident in leaving no air! A final question?... Although braided cables are stronger, is it true they have a larger diameter for fluid to pass through and actually slightly lower the performance of the break. I have braided cables on my 26" and they have gone downhill for sure. Hope you can all trust and value my advice after 8 yrs of Trials, David
  5. Does anyone know the Sweep and rise of the onza carbon bars, its not listed on tarty? whats bars do you run?
  6. Thank you, thats really helpful. In your opinion would this ... http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/product.php?pr...;category_id=14 with a 35 degree, 90mm stem feel about the same? The stays are 380, which is whats listed for the ZHI z3. The BB is +45, so 5mm more and wheelbase of 1085 also 5mm more. so am I looking at a 5mm shorter stem and maybe 5mm higher? to get same geo as your zhi? May I ask what the geo is on the meta forks your running, and also what stem bar you got there? Thanks
  7. What sort of angle would you recommend? 71-72 degrees? any frames I should note?
  8. As the topic describes, I'm 5ft 7 and I ride an echo control +20 bb, 1065 wheelbase, 400mm forks. I've ridden stock now (and more recently 24" also) for about 8 years. The bike I felt most conformable on was the first ashton. It was 1035, level BB and I used the brisa bar and stem. When I changed to my Control it felt long. My gapping has improve and I can surge Higher. I really like the feel, but at the same time I feel like it puts a strain on my back and it is a little too long... My current bar and stem setup on the control after full possible stacker's on a 200mm steerer is 110mm, 10 degrees and onza carbon bars. I would like advice (preferably from someone short) on getting the right setup. Maybe a larger rise stem, maybe i'll have to go to a larger rise in the bars or not as wide. I know it sounds crazy but id like to go for more of a BB rise again... I was thinking that if I get a +40bb frame, and 420 length forks it would feel the same. But most new frames are longer at 1085-1100. How can I get round these problems with my height? I don't want to go mod and I love the way my bike handles, but its too long... expert advice please In an Ideal world I'd like a +45BB frame, as long as possible but confortable. Anyone got an equation to put 5ft 7" into, lol ?
  9. Voted Very interested in how you could implement the ability to take a chain on and off, without seriously weakening a frame!
  10. Ok, this may stir up a good debate or I may just be called an idiot... We all know that carbon is very strong. So how do you guys reckon these would fair up for trials use... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Trigon-EX-RIGID-...=item45ef3f5b71 They are a carbon MTB fork, so their prob designed for XC. Would they be strong enough? I think that the 415mm length and 48mm offset would be great. They weigh in at just 500g which is crazy and come with a 300mm steerer, so you can get lots of stackers in before you cut them to size! So opinions, would they cut it for trials use?
  11. Turns out that the fact i could have any spacers on my steerer and the 10deg stem wern't my only problems. My fatty r forks are only 380mm long which is very short for forks. After asking around, turns out my BB is 16mm lower than normal and my bars a massive 62mm after doing the maths. So thats why it feel hideous.AM waiting on new forks (09 echo urbans) to come back in stock at tarty, and since their brand new I can get some stackers in too, thanks for all your input. I knew something was wrong...
  12. yeah man, gd call. bar stem setup is bad. I got no room for stem stackers on the steerer so im going change the 90mm 10 degree stem for a system Ex 35 degree 100mm stem, and that should give me about 40mm extra height, at only 6mm shorter. the bars are supposed to be 2.5" rise so im not changing them, but if it still feels too low, i'll buy some black markets! I'm sure 40mm of height will be enough. just hope the 35 angle doesnt make it feel odd to spin and stuff... vid coming soon... Dave
  13. On a serious note though... who is the women in your avatar? No seriously. Name, size, what website? lol
  14. Hi I took the bar and stem from my 24UK onto my inspired fourplay and what seemed fine is now really bad.I used to be able to manual easily, the front end came up no problem and I could bunny hop well too (over bar height up onto things) Now on the inspired the front end feels hard to pull up and to hold. I realize that the frame is lightly longer and also the BB is +10 over the 24UK. Anyway my questions are about improving my setup... I currently have a hope CNC 90mm stem with 10 degree rise, and azonic double walls 2.5" risers I appreciate that adding height will prob be the first step forward. are there any bars with larger than a 2.5" rise? what about a larger degree rise in the stem (no more room for stem stacker's as the steerer of the forks is too short) Other than this what else is going to make it feel nicer for poping up/bunny hops/manuals etc... Ignoring the obvious need for rise, what about the length of the stem Longer? shorter? and what about bar width? would longer bars make things easier, more angled bars? I would love some detailed answers, feel free to throw some explications my way too if you like. Would be nice to hear from anyone with a good setup too, especially if you ride the inspired. Thank you Dave
