They stop flex in the frame and rim when the clamping pressure from is applied. If you watch the frame and rim with no booster on when you apply the brake, the frame will flex like a mother f**ker, but with a booster it flex less. Makes the brake feel alot stiffer and less spongy so you get a nice firm brake lock.
